    Hi everyone.

Over this weekend, my mobo died on me. Actually, it died yesterday afternoon.
It was fairly new. I only got it a few months ago (or so) you know. Anyways.

    How ??

Well, I was attempting to get my firewire card working on my pc here, under
my windows 98 setup. Well, in short.., one thing lead to another, not being
able to get my TRV-22 and ADVC-100 to be recignised, bla bla bla..,
    .
. . . and then finally my graphics card wouldn't work anymores, and
    .
    . . . . . and then my system wouldn't power up, and
    .
    . . . . . . . and then my non of my other cards wouldn't work, etc etc. and I
    . . . . . . . couldn't figure out why.., till I tried something weard.

    Ok, the weard...
I took all I/O cards out of my mobo and only had my hd's and 1 ram chip
inside my pc. Sure enough, mobo came on.

    Next step...

I pop in my AGP graphics card again (ATI-Rage Fury Pro) and try and power
on. Well, it turn ons for 1 (or less) seconds and shuts down. Darn !!
So, I pop the AGP card out, pop in my WinFast cap card, and pop in my AGP
card again, and power on.., mobo starts up for 15 seconds and shuts down
    again. Darn again !!
So, I pop out ALL my cards again (Winfast cap card and AGP card) and
this time, I pop in my old ATI-Rage 128 (PCI) card all by itself, in an PCI
slit nest bottom of case. (is that PCI number 5 ?? .. furthest away from CPU
    fan - anyways)
This time, the mobo starts up again, but for 10 seconds, and shuts down.
    Darn again, and again !!
    .
    Now, I'm stumped.

So, I pull all I/O cards (shold be cards) anyways.. and start the mobo
again. Sure enough, it starts up w/out hitch again. It can stay on for every
    like this. Anyways.

Now, I'm really confused and stumped
    So, I go to my 2nd PC, a ESC K7S5A / XP 1800+ / Windows 98 (gold)

I swap all my I/O cards from my main pc (K7 Triton 400 mobo) and (take
out all my other I/O cards from my 2nd PC - - my capture pc) and I put in
all my I/O cards, and hd's.
    .
    Results ???
    .
    All is working again

So, what happened ?? and what caused my main pc to go "cookoo" ??
    .
Well, my theory is. Somewhere's along my trial and error of getting my
firewire card(s) working in my main pc, I damn'aged my AGP slot's
graphis circuitry (when I was pulling it out - - forgot that there is a retaining
screw (spring loaded) and didn't realize it, when I was yanking it - hehe.. )
and that may have damanaged my mobo for good
    .
However, all else is working fine, except for my Winfast cap card. For some
strange reason, during windows 98 boot up, I get a windows protection error
every time. But, pull the Winfast card out, and windows 98 boots right up
    w/ no problems.

I guess my next step is to see whats wrong w/ my Winfast card now
Sheesh. I know I handled this card like a delicate baby.., but go figure.
True though, this card is in another mobo/cpu/chipset.
    .
Also, I still want to get my firewire card working. I'll see what's up with the
    both of them.

    Tune in to another update

Thanks for reading my trials and tributes,

  2. My guess first guess would be one of your PCI/AGP cards are bad.

    or...

    Your CPU is overheating.

Another possibility is a power supply dying. You could trade it with the other PC.

Yes. Random stuff like that is often the PSU.

I might have a look into that at a later date. Right now, I'm still working out
my firewire problems under Windows 98 Gold. I had a working setup
for this OS and firewire for the last two years straight (since I got my ADVC-100)
and have made beautiful music together ever since. But, after my my Main PC
died, and I swapped out my I/O cards and things from my main pc and put
them all into the 2nd pc (of which was setup for capturing only (and dv))
I could not get my firewire working. That is, the firewire (or driver) is not
recignizing my TRV-22 cam or my ADVC-100 device.., even though on some
attempts, I can see the mouse flicker (when you pull the f.cable in/out, which
means that everything is working correctly - - or so I'm lead to beleave)
    Anyways.

    The UPDATE #2 ...

** Please note, that i'm on a rampage to get my firewire working again, to
    ** communicate w/ my ADVC-100 and my TRV-22 cam.

After spending so much time on getting my firewire to work (because of my
    many TRV-22 / ADVC-100 projects) I decided to souly work on my 2nd pc's
OLD setup.., because I somehow tainted the OLD 2nd pc setup by making
one change - - I changed the firewire driver. Anyways.

So, I put back the following, (and w/ a bunch of trial n error with placing
the I/O cards in the ORIGINAL slots) I reinstalled only the following
items from my ORIGINAL 2nd pc setup, which was my capture "only" pc:

    * Windows 98 Gold - - (not win98SE)
    * ATI Rage 128 (PCI card)
    * Aureal Audio card
    * Firewire card by SIIG (w/ the SIIG stamp over the chip)
    * previous HardDrive OS setup/drivers/software etc.

The short story to the above items and setup..

After a careful battery run of hundreds of trial n error scenarios, I was
finally able to communicate once again w/ my ADVC-100 and TRV-22 cam - - Yeah!!
All works perfectly, but in it's ORIGINAL 2nd pc setup (the above)
    .
    .
But, in trying to duplicate this, using my Main PC setup:

    * Windows 98 Gold - - (not win98SE)
    * ATI Rage Fury Pro (AGP card)
    * Turto Beach (santa cruz) Audio card
    * Firewire card by SIIG (w/ the SIIG stamp over the chip)
    * Main PC HardDrive OS setup/drivers/software etc.

I still can't get the ADVC-100 and TRV-22 to communicate. I've even copied
the drivers and *.INF and *.sys files to a folder, and tried to install from
THAT folder, but still no go.

Oh, FWIW.. and by the way.., w/ this 2nd pc setup, my power suppy is slightly warm
to the touch (on hot days) and cool on warm days (such as today, +/- 70 degrees)
While my Main PC's power supply is close to boiling hot, and my hd's are way to
hot to the touch. Right now, in my 2nd pc, they are slightly warm :P Anyways.

    Thanks guys for your input,
