McDonald's Corp. said Monday it will rent out DVDs at 105 of its Denver stores, in a wider test of offering patrons movies with their burgers and fries.
McDonald's already offers automated digital video disk rentals at kiosks in 34 Denver stores. The remaining kiosks will be installed by the end of June, spokeswoman Lisa Howard said.
"We're looking for solutions for people living very busy lives who are looking for convenience, value and a relevant offering," Howard said.
The Redbox machines will be in operation 24 hours a day. New DVD releases will be added every Tuesday. The charge for a DVD is $ 1 a day plus tax, with a credit card used for payment. The kiosks, made by Los Gatos, Calif.-based DVDPlay Inc., hold as many as 350 copies of the top 25 or 30 movie titles.

That is only Denver.......
Besides, Longs has them for $1.99 or a dollar on special.
Who wants to talk to a machine about how your dvd didn't play? -
Wonder if they will chuck in a free meal as well....
Bet this never makes it to the right side of the pond....Not bothered by small problems...

McDonald's is finally offering something worthwhile to the consumers. What will they think of next? Tasty nutritious food perhaps?

Yannow, that reminds me of the rental machine that a local convenience store had back in the mid-late 80's. I belive it was called the "RoboRental" and it looked almost like the type of vending machine that holds candy and snacks (big box w/ a huge window on the front). Think it held about 100 VHS tapes in several rows. So, you'd get a membership card from the store, put it in a reader on the machine and make a selection by number. A robot device (think of the mechanism that moves the pens on a flatbed plotter) would grab the tape and drop it through a vending slot. Then you'd take the tape(s) upto the counter to pay. Returning was the opposite: you put the tape back into a loading slot, slide your card, and tell the machine to load it back in the proper place; the "robot" would grab the tape and it load it back in its proper slot. I think the price was $1.50 per day and they somehow had a way to keep track of late returns (i.e. to charge late fees); card terminal at the counter connected to the machine, maybe, but I can't remember. But I do remember the clerk would tell you of any late fees due before allowing new rentals.

I rented one of these DVDs tonight, and was pretty impressed. Each machine holds about 30-50 titles (not sure how many of each) and they were all newer titles like Starsky & Hutch, ROTK, Paycheck and Along Came Polly.
Renting took about 2 minutes tops and is accomplished by touchscreen. No memberships needed, just a credit card or debit card and out comes your movie.
The discs I got did have some scratches, but no worse than Blockbuster and they played perfectly. I am personally going to keep renting from these machines. -
Innovative concept.
Can you drop off your rentals at the drive thru window when you're done watching them? -
They don't take SpeedPass?
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
I wonder if they are going to stock that film about that guy who ate at McD's for a month?

Naw, you can't drop them in the drive through, but it's still a great idea. The one I used isn't so much in a McD's but inside a convenience store which happens to have a McD's. If I actually had to drive to a McD's store that would make me less likely to use the machine. Since I go to that store nearly every day either for coffee or gas or something, I find it very convenient, not to mention cheap.
If these work out well though I can see these machines popping up all over in convenience stores, grocery markets and anywhere else. -
Not all that great, my local library rents DVDs for 50 cents a day, and they have quite a good selection of new released movies. As the library is not open on Sunday we can stop in Saturday morning and get a movie while out running errands then return it Monday morning on the way to work for a wopping total of 50 cents.
