  1. On my old computer I used to be able to convert dvd movies to avi files using only dvd shrink and dvd2avi. i would get the vob files on the hard drive with dvd shrink and then use dvd2avi to save them as an avi. when it was done i was left with one big wav file for the audio and like 4 or 5 seperate avi files for all the video. my problem is that i cant do it on my new computer. i'm 100% sure that they're the only 2 programs that i used. i also used to get more options when i clicked save avi under the file menue in dvd2avi. now i only get 2. can anyone help?
    thank you

I'm intrigued that you would use DVDShrink for this sort of operation. I normally would use a dedicated ripper but either way I guess the result is the same.

At a guess I would say that you have possibly downloaded a later version of DVD2AVI and perhaps don't have all of the options set up as you previously did.

What is your intention with this AVIs ? Do you need the 4 or 5 files or would you prefer 1 nig file ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  4. the reason i used dvdshrink is because i really dont have much of an idea what i'm doing. i'm really new to this. as far as having 4 or 5 files, thats just the way it did it. it really doent matter how many different files there are because i'll just bring as many as i need to on the timeline in premiere. i'm using the same version of dvd2avi, i had it backed up on a cd. i am using a different version of dvdshrink though. maybe i'm missing a codec of some sort or something...like i said, i really dont know what i'm doing. everywhere i look though everyone says that you need more than just dvd shrink and dvd2avi to convert the vob files to an avi, but i really dont remeber using any other programs. maybe i'm forgetting something...i really dont know.

OK. I'm a bit confused about what it is you're trying to do, so I'll need you to clarify a bit. Maybe I can suggest a better way.

You start with a DVD. You convert to AVI, then load AVIs into Premiere, and output as what ?

What is the final destination/format of these files when you are finished completely ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

  6. ok...here's what i want to do.
start with dvd, convert to avi so i can do some editing in premiere, then output back to dvd using premiere's mpeg encoder and a dvd writing program. the part i'm stuck on is converting to avi. i used to be able to use dvd2avi to convert the vob files from my hard drive but it wont work any more.

    good, thanks for that

I think I might have a couple of better ways for you.

    1. Convert the sections you need to AVI using my guide here. You can probably disregard large sections of this but essentially it has all the info you require.

    2. Rip the VOBs you need to your Hard Drive using SmartRipper or DVDDecrypter. Use VirtualDub-MPEG2 or VirtualDubMod to open these VOBs and save to AVI.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  9. ok, useing VirtualDub seems to have worked....thank you just a couple of small problems. First, when i open v-dub its supposed to show 2 screens that the video plays in, right? i get one and a half. its like the screes are too big for the window. no big deal, but can the screen sizes be adjusted? second, the video and audio are out of sinc. its like the video is half a second ahead of the audio...agian, not really that big of a deal beacause i can sinc them up in premiere but if there's a way to fix it that would be good. finally the audio is very low. is there some way to adjust the volume at which its converted? oh...also i used dvd shrink to get the video off the dvd. is there any reason you suggested the other two or do they do the same thing?
    thank you

That is because, by default, it will display at the same resolution as the source. In VirtualDub-MPEG2 you can right-click on either screen, and change the zoom factor and you should be able to get them both fully visible. Might I add here that the one on the left is the input and the one on the right is the output, and even though you can only see half the output screen, I guarantee that the AVI will be fine.

The sound delay is in the DVD audio stream itself, and can be adjusting under Audio > Interleaving in the "audio skew correction" part. You can adjust the volume by going to Audio > Volume.

The other two are dedicated DVD rippers. DVDShrink is primarily used as a transcoder, which means that it reduces the size of DVDs theoretically unnoticably in terms of quality. A dedicated ripper will be faster than DVDShrink and gives you more options.
    If in doubt, Google it.
