hi, i have a Philips DVD recorder, like one you normally hook up to a TV, and i was wondering if i could somehow hook it up to my computer so that i can burn movies i've made onto it? this would be key for me, because then i wouldn't have to spend any more $$$ to buy a firewire dvd recorder for my mac.

You can hook up to a DVD recorder via the video out on your computer. You will be doing a digital (computer) to analog (video out) to digital (DVD) recording, which will not be as good as making and burning a DVD with your computer.

Some DVD recorders (Panasonic for one) can be hooked up via firewire and the video recorded that way. From what I understand, most recorders (Toshiba for one) expect a camcorder to be hooked up to the firewire port, so they won't work.

There is another way to "hook up to the computer". If you open your recorder and take a look. A lots of machines use standard DVD writer inside with IDE and power connectors. Then you can just hook it up to the PC like any DVD writer and use it. For mac it may not work.

Firewire connector in DVD recorder only accept dv signal. You can not expect the recorder to act like a firewire DVD writer.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that.

  5. If your Philips has a firewire port, Philips is one of the brands that allow you to connect it via firewire to your computer. At that point, it acts just like a DV camcorder. Using your editing software, simply save your movie out to the DV-Out.

  6. TJD or anyone,

I just purchased a Philips DVDRW 615/17 recorder with i-link, primarily for going from my non-linear editing system directly to DVD, without having to spend hours rendering files and burning DVD's on my computer. So far, although both my DV tape recorder and DV camera can see and record the firewire signal, the DVD recorder cannot. I have the correct input selected (CAM2), but the recorder says, "No Signal". If I record the program to DV and then connect the DVD recorder via firewire to the DV deck, the DVD recorder has no problems recording the program.

    What could be the problem?

I have been able to go firewire from the computer, to the DV deck and analog from the deck into the DVD recorder and record from the computer to DVD recorder in real time. But at every transition, the DVD recorder thinks it's seeing copy protection and pauses the recorder. Has anyone had that problem?

Thanks for your help in these matters.

  7. Why not just make a dvd-r & put that in your computer & edit that? Seems what most everyone is doing.

  8. Using DVD Decrypter I get the files onto my HD from the DVD-+RW disc and then burn a DVD as normal.

He is talking about feeding dv signal from PC to recorder through firewire. Not another way around.

But I haven't heard of anyone being able to accomplish that with any machines other those manufactured by JVC and Pioneer. Is this not the case?

  11. Can anyone give me model numbers of JVC and Pioneer DVD recorders that would record directly from computer via firewire?

    Thanks!

My JVC M10S does but I've only tried Vegas for that purpose, so far. I also have Studio 9 so I'll try that next and see what happens, if anything.

Far as I know, ALL the Pioneer models, with firewire of course, are bi-directional. That means you should be able to transfer back and forth between firewire-equipped Pioneer DVDRs and your PC.

  13. I've been having problems outputting from Pinnacle Edition 5.1 to the Philips DVDR 615. It didn't see a signal from the computer's firewire port. I just tried outputting from the timeline in Adobe Premiere 6.02, using my Pinnacle Pro One board (via firewire). Premiere/Pro One saw the Philips recorder, and I was able to output video directly from the Premiere timeline, via firewire to the Philips DVD recorder, also with no "copy protection" error messages. It worked like a charm.

Has anyone had success going firewire with Pinnacle Edition?

    Thanks!
