    Anybody else ever seen this? I think it started with my last round of security updates from MS.

    I get the downloading codec message, codec error message ... then the video/audio plays fine.

    Yes, I see it all the time. It started for me some months ago. It still plays, but Windows Movie Maker has become so unstable on my system, it seems to crash at the drop of a hat.
