  1. This week I'm going to get a Dual 2.3 GHz G5 for work. ( yay! )

I'd like to get into DVD Authoring as there are a lot of opportunities in my area for someone with these skills.

I'm vaguely familiar with most of the stuff that is mentioned on this forum and I've got a lot to learn.

I'll be pulling my video from either MiniDV OR Beta-SP. This is my first step. I'll need some kind of A/D convertor to digitize the tapes putting the files on my comp. Any reccomendations on one that I can get for a reasonable price?

Next what is the best format to transfer to? MPEG-4 I'm guessing.

Any helpful links you guys can give me would be most appreciated.

    Thanks
    JW

if you're capturing dv just use firewire and dv codec settings. for the beta-sp, this all depends on how much you want to spend. you could just transfer all beta to dv and then capture that way. or buy like a canopus advc -100 (they have a few different models i htink this is the low end one, but it's still very good) this box has fw in/out and composite/s-vid in/out. you could go s-vid out of the beta deck into this box then capture as dv into fcp. or you could look into getting a capture card with s-vid or component inputs, maybe a aja board (not sure on a model number though). this will cost more though.

and i'll second the huge harddrive. and also get dvd studio pro.

Third on the huge HD ( see my profile..I'm at 740 GBs and GROWING!)
as well as DVD Studio Pro. Stay at
OSX 10.39, avoid Quicktime 7/7.01 like the plague for now,
and make sure you get decent amount of ram, Compressor,
the app you will be using mostly to compress video
for output, like lots of ram and a decent processor.

Also reccommend you get Martin Sitter's book, Jerry Hoffman's book,
both excellent reading and will get
you up to speed fast. I'm mostly self-taught, and i
can vouch for BOTH books being very helpful to me.

  5. you guys ROCK! thanks for the advice. Massive amounts of HD space was pretty much common sense but I'm sure it can't be stressed enough G5 2.3 is currently shipping with I believe 280GB drive and I've already got over 300GB in supplemental drive space via FWire.

I'm going to check out the A/D machines suggested and also I'll be looking @ the books you suggested.

Thanks again and please keep the advice coming.
