  1. I've been having problems with disks recorded on my LiteOn 5001 freezing and skipping on other players. The problem just started this week; prior to that they worked fine. I've tried several different brands, and it always seems that the first part skips, while the 2nd does not.

Has anyone else had this problem? It's very frustrating. If I can't get it resolved, I'm either going to to exchange it for another 5001 or get a different model altogether....

  3. I was hoping you'd respond! I don't think it's the media because I've successfully recorded a number disks already that worked fine. Then I went a few weeks without recording anything, and now it's messing up. I did have a couple of cheap samples I got from Rima.com, so I wasn't surprised they didn't work, but when I used my more trustworthy Imation and TDK's, they did the same things.

What's strange is that they freeze up during the first part, rather than the end like ones I've recorded on my Pioneer 107D, which suggests that it's the inner part of the disk if I understand it correctly. For example, I recorded a couple of Sopranos episodes at the SP (2 hour) mode, and on each the 1st one would freeze up, while the 2nd would play fine. Then, I copied 2 movies in the 4 hour EP mode, and once again the 2nd played fine.

The only other thing I can think of is that some dust is in the drive. I could give it a blast of compressed air. I guess I could even try a cleaning disk since I got it from Costco and can return it without any problems. I've been hoping they'd get some 5005's in stock but so far they haven't. They do have the Pioneer 220(?), so I'm wondering if I'd be better of with that one....

  4. I think I've narrowed the problem down to my trusty Apex AD1500. I tried a disk on it and it froze up about midway, but played fine on my Sony downstairs and on the LiteOn. I'm not sure why they're messing up, because they played fine before. It seems to play everything else okay. I got a special deal for $14.92 (Columbus Day rebate), so I guess I'm lucky it worked at all. Still, I'd hate to see it die since I was able to hack it and turn off MV, not that I've ever taken advantage of that feature....

    Hi,

Costco got Pioneer 210 (same as 310), not 220 for $249 + tax. I just paid $299 + $6.95 handling fee for JVC DR-M10S. It may be a better deal than 210 IMHO. I used LiteOn 5001 and backed up 50 tapes to DVD without any skipping problem. I always used DVD+RW (Imation) and reauthored on computer and burned to DVD-R. It is a good capture device and macrovision hackable. But for VCR replacement, the recording options are just too limited compared to JVC.

  6. I'm going to test these disks on a few other players before I do anything else. I might get a DVD/VCR combo, which would save some space, too....

Try DVD+RW. It is more reliable than DVD+R.

    Yes, DVD+RW over DVD+R
    Yes, JVC better than LiteON
No, no combo units. Bad things.

I see issues on LiteOn, small things when you tinker.
For a machine to not see MV and recorder commercial tapes easy, this is the one to get, the LiteON's.

The 3-hour is the culprit on the jitter issues, as I see it now on VHS only. Not on tv source or SVHS, just my VHS. Somebody else saw this before me.

I'd bet it's the DVD+R or the players.

  9. I recorded a movie on +RW and it played back fine. As far as the combo goes, I'm thinking of it strictly for a playback unit. I hardly ever need the VCR any more, but I still have a few VHS titles in my collection. I probably won't transfer them to DVD for now since I've been able to find a lot of them on satellite. I really don't even need the Apex, but it doesn't heat up like the LiteOn.

The other alternative is to trade the LiteOn in for a Pioneer or whatever else they have. I'd probably have to switch to -R, meaning my stack of +RW's would have to be replaced. That's why I was holding out for the 5005. Whatever I do, I'm going to stick with Costco because of the replacement policy.

    Stay tuned....

  11. Update:

I took the LiteOn back and got a Pioneer DVR-210. So far I like it a lot better, particularly the One Touch Recording. It has a lot more features than the LiteOn - in general it's a lot more sophisticated....
