I have original footage (DV AVI file) with the sound only on the left channel. I need to copy that sound onto the right channel. I am aware I could save a separate wav, make the change in the wav file, and then copy it back into the video, but then I risk sync problems, which I would like to avoid as I do not have solid sounds or visuals to sync on. How can I do a simple copy from L to R without extracting the sound? I have Pinnacle Studio 9 and VirtualDub and have access to others. Thanks.

You have three options:
1.Reshoot the video with both channels.
2.Recapture the video but select mono WAV(PCM) instead of stereo DV audio.
3.Use TMPGEnc,etc and export the audio to a mono wav, then import to R channel in Studio.Make sure you select the same samplerate as the original(eg 32,44.1 or 48khz) -
You can try to put the avi in vegas 5. There a trial for it.
When you put it in makes a video track and audio track.
On the audio track, right click the track, go down to channels and
select combine.
Then hit file and render as,you can output back to avi.
I hope this work -
demux/save wav, then open in Audacity and duplicate the one channel, then mux back together. All done with freeware programs and you still have the original file if you end up with sync problems so you are not out much but time.
If done right, you should not have sync problems anyway.
