I have the Pioneer 510 HS DVR (w/80gig HDD). I am trying to capture VHS via S-Video, RCA input, even firewire (when the analog has been copied to a DV camera/tape first). I am getting a "strobe" video effect every 5 minutes or so. The audio is intact, but it seems that the Pioneer is dropping frames? I bought this for the sole reason of transfering my VHS to DVD. The recording of TV/CABLE to the HDD is perfect - but when I perform the same function of (Analog Video) to the HDD, the "strobe effect" is too annoying to overcome. Does anyone have a suggestion? Should I sell this unit and get the Panasonic 80 gig DVR? My unit has the firewire input which I had hoped would elimate any potential issue. All suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

Sounds like a Macrovision (copy protection) problem. There are several devices one can buy to remove macrovision from the signal output by your vcr, ranging from relatively cheap to fairly expensive ($40-$300). The more expensive ones are TBCs (time base correctors. Do a search for each and you can learn some more. I have recently purchased the Sima Color Corrector and it works well for me in conjunction with the built in TBC in my JVC vcr.

I do not think it is a macrovision issue as these are VHS of home movies. In addition, I have a macrovision stripper device that I bought several years ago for about $40. I still get the dropped frames "strobe" effect when I am using it. Will a higher priced TBC solve this for transferring issue or is it my recorder or setting? Thanks.

I am using a brand new VHS S-Video JVC HR-S3901U VCR. My brother bought it for me off the internet in hopes our older VHS would play better with a S-Video output. We still have the problem, that is mentioned above. I have transferred to S-Video out to my DV camera input and still see the same problem. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Hi,
Long after the fact, but I hade a similar problem with my Pioneer DVR-510. My solution: use the deck I recorded the VHS in. It seems to be a sync issue, or perhaps luminance is too high.
I hope this helps,
