I have file with the specs as shown below:

File: 616 MB (606 MB), duration: 1:02:13, type: MPG, 1 audio streams), quality: 62 %

    Video : 507 MB, 1140 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 352*240 (4:3), MPG1 = MPEG 1 (VCD), Supported

    Audio : 99 MB, 224 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 2 [0xc0], Supported

The question I have is about the bit rate settings in ffmeggui:
As I want to put this on a DVD, I need to change the audio to 48000khz, now I know that TmpgEnc will do this automatically for me, but I have read that AC3 gives better quality audio for smaller file sizes...so:

    1) With audio (as above at 224kps) should I set ffmeggui to 192kps or lower, say 128kps, would this affect the final audio quality or just give me a smaller file size?

    2) Do I need to change the sampling rate from 44 to 48000

    3) As the above is an Mpeg1, am I just wasting my time converting the audio and should I just use ffmeggui for audio extraction of AVI's

    Thanks

    Hi chaps,
I hate to ask again but I really do need a little help on this.

If it only gave a smaller file size, why would you encode at a higher rate? That said, yes you will loose quailty the lower you go. I'd go w/ 192kbps 48,000hz

Each time you encode your audio it will get worse not better, so no matter what, your converted audio will be worse then the mp2 you have now. But you have to convert it too 48,000hz so there's not much you can do about it.

My Samsung S-221 DVD player would not play ffmeggui encoded AC3, not an entirely compliant file.

I have yet to find a DVD player that would not play TMPGEnc mpeg1 layer2 audio. Suggest you stick with mpeg1 layer2 @224, since thats what you already have.
