  1. theres just so much information on this site i find it difficult to find exactly what i need...so i thought i'd make a post.

I got a lite-on 851 dvd burner....and i want to make some backups of my movies....how do i do so? i mean there are so many programs and ways people do this...i just want the basic way to get the main movie onto a dvd.

i am using sonic mydvd as my burning application so ways that center around that would be greatly appreciated.

I'd like either of the following
    - the easiest guide to follow that would use sonic mydvd
    - listing of software i need to use to copy my dvd's to a dvd-r

The step by step processes taht i've seen have all been very confusing to me, i don't think i'm stupid, i'm just new to this, and would like a bit more personal help than the guides provide for me.

    thanks in advance

p.s. Read the guides, check the forums... ask when you have a REAL question...
p.s. Don't take it personally, but some things you gotta learn on your own... or at least try to...

  4. Everything depends on what you mean by "movies." If you mean DVD movies, this can't be done with MyDVD. You'll need DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink. MyDVD makes VCDs & DVDs from mpeg & avi clips (potentially useful to you if you have digital camcorder).

  5. You need DVD Decrypter for ripping and burning, and DVD Shrink to compress decrypted file on hard drive to fit on DVD-R single sided.

If you have FAT32 file system you also need DAEMON Tools.

    These are all freeware.

  6. just so you know AND i'm not complaing, but i would LEARN on my own but right now i am a bit busy in life..so i don't have alot of time to mess around with dvd settings.... so if you don't juggle 2 jobs and currently take a summer course, please lay off me, i'm taking on a full load

ok, so in order to get a dvd movie made in mydvd i need to make it into what format?
i got the ripping part down, as i've been making vcds for a while....but i'm not sure what i do after that, i use dvd shrink, and then do what?

sorry if my questions are not really questions but i'm a bit lost.

  7. How to copy a DVD-9 to DVD±R using DVD Shrink 3.1.x

This guide shows how to copy a DVD-9 to a single DVD±R using DVD Shrink 3.1.x. The old guide considering DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 is still on the site but I suggest you use this one as there are many bug fixes and many new features as well, like DVD burning and many more. Keep in mind that you should have a version of Nero that supports DVD burning, I suggest Nero 6, to use DVD Burning. Enough with talking, let's start with the guide now!

Let's open DVD Shrink 3.1. We may need to change some settings first so select Edit -> Preferences.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In the first tab make sure that DVD-5 is selected as the target size. (1) Select Automatically open VIDEO_TS subfolders. Now, the low-priority mode helps your computer and if you plan to do other things while encoding and your PC is not that fast I suggest you check it. If you just leave it alone to do the encoding or you have a fast PC I suggest you leave it unchecked.
In the Output Files put the settings as you see them here (they are the default ones).

In the other two tabs, Preview and Stream Selections put whatever you think the best. (Stream selections, just save your time, but you better select them differently for every DVD).

    When you're done click OK.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After you're done with that click the Open Disc button in the main DVD Shrink window and there select the drive that you have the DVD you want to copy in. Click OK.
Then DVD Shrink will do a small analysis of the DVD and it is going to load it in the main window.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is how DVD Shrink should look after the DVD is loaded. See the bar that is all green? It shows that DVD Shrink has automatically set the compression and now we can make our copy. If you want to keep everything (menus, extras etc) click Backup! now.

What I suggest is that you keep only the main movie so that you get much better quality. To do that click Re-author.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This the the screen you should see after clicking Re-author. You can drag-and-drop anything you want from the right to the left and it is going to be included in your DVD. Be carefull: drop only the main movie and any extras you want, the menus are not going to work this way, you have to back-up the full disc. Now copy the main movie in the left.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The main movie is now in our re-authored DVD. Now click Compression Settings.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

These are the compression settings. They are the same as we know them from 3.0 Beta 5, just the look has changed. I suggest you leave only one Audio stream to save space. Leave compression to Automatic it just gets you the best quality you can get. At Subpicture you can select subtitles, not shown here but select as many you want as they are about 1 MB each.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time to back-up our DVD. Select Backup! from the DVD Shrink toolbar.

First you have to select what to do. If you have Nero installed you can select to burn the DVD (what I have selected) directly or create a DVD image. If you don't have Nero select to create the DVD files for later burning like the old DVD Shrink was doing.

Also select the Temp folder. It can be any folder, but remember that after the burn DVD Shrink doesn't delete the files, you have to do it yourself.

Now select the DVD Region tab. Here I suggest you create a region-free. Of course you can select other regions, but you have nothing to earn as region-free discs are playable in all DVD players around the world.

After that select the Backup Options tab.

Here you can select Deep Analysis (1). This will give you better quality but will take the double time. If you don't care about time I suggest you use it. The Low priority mode (2) is explained in Step 2, if you selected it there, select it here too. The third and fourth options are obvious!
Finally at the burn options input the volume labe (1) and select option (2) if you want DVD Shrink to erase already written DVD±RW discs. Finally click OK to start the back-up!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finally DVD Shrink will start encoding. If you have selected just to output the DVD files that's all it is going to do...
... if not, it will start burning the disc.
Finally it finishes! Now you have a nice back up!

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If that doesn't work, I got a few more for you... This guide courtesy of dvd-guides.com.
