  1. I have Wedding DV tape, total 80min, and want to translate it to one 4.7G DVDR.
    Can you advise some adjustment on original DVD Pal template to get better result? Thank you.

  3. Thank you John.
    Is it really import on "Motion search precision" setting?
    I was used to encode VCD by TmpgEnc and I had tried to adjust the setting, but I can find visiable difference on VCD.

    I just used the default setting of "Motion search precision" (fast one) for DVD format. Will it improve on video quality with miracle if I change it to "slow one"?

    it's dependant on your source whether extra motion searching is useful, if there's not a lot of motion it won't make much difference. however, i'm assuming you didn't shoot your wedding video with steadicam or a decent tripod, so extra motion searching will be beneficial.

    do a test encode with some pans/zooms with different levels of motion searching, you should find a suitable level.

    Hi Yim,

    As it's 80 minutes, here's a few suggestions:

    1. Use compressed audio

    This will allow you to use a higher bitrate for the video, and so better quality. Your realistic choices are 2 channel AC3 or MP2. AC3 is universally OK (i.e. in the NTSC and PAL DVD specs), whereas MP2 is only in the PAL spec but you are likely to be OK in NTSC land (but not guaranteed).

    An audio bitrate of 224 (fine for a wedding DVD) will allow you (according to the DVDRHelp Bitrate Calculator) to have a video bitrate of 7,395kbps - which should be plenty.

    For AC3: Extract the audio (VirtualDub can do this if the source is AVI, and save to WAV) and then load the WAV (or other acceptable audio format) into ffmpeggui.

    As you're doing the audio outside of TMPGEnc, set the "stream type" in TMPGEnc to "Video only" (radio buttons in the bottom right of the main window).

    For MP2: You've two choices:

    1. Use ffmpeggui exactly the same as mentioned for AC3, but obviously select MP2 instead.

    2. TMPGEnc encodes the audio to MP2. Some say that it isn't the best MP2 encoder, but you can download the tooLame MP2 encoder (freeware I think) and get TMPGEnc to use that (Option -> Environmental Settings -> External Tool tab).

    While you're at it, you might as well download the SSRC software and have TMPGEnc use that too (also supposed to be good).

    2. CBR or VBR?

    If you haven't got any of the following, CBR should be OK:

    Fast panning (i.e. quickly move left to right).
    Lots of wobbles / hand-shake.
    Fast zooms (in or out).
    Fast motion (unlikely, unless they got married at a Formual 1 Grand Prix!)

    2-pass VBR will take longer (coz of the second pass) but can help to reduce / effectively remove any of the above. If you want to know how, I can go into detail but I'll refrain for the moment.

    Settings for 2-pass VBR:

    Min = 1,000kbps
    Average = 6,000kbps
    Max = 8,000kbps

    3. Motion search precision

    flan's words are wise.

    That said, I use "High Quality (slow)" and leave the video to encode overnight, so I don't care how long it takes. I haven't found a way / not sure if TMPGEnc can be set to close the PC down when it's down. I keep meaning to look into it...

    4. Look out for...

    If you decide to ditch the wizard and do your settings manually, make sure that the "Output interval of sequence header" setting on the "GOP Structure" tab is set to 1.

    Make sure your max frames per GOP isn't more than 15 (PAL) or 18 (NTSC).

    Your I,P,B numbers can be what you like, but 1-4-2 (PAL) or 1-5-2 (NTSC) are one of the generally accepted configurations.

    at work at the mo but from memory if you use TMPGenc file - batch encode - add current project to batch. then in the batch window there's a button to shutdown once complete. or at least there is in my mind...

    Hi flan,

    Ah, I see. But I have a problem with the batch window:

    The right hand side of the window has been chopped off when displayed - I can't do anything about (resize etc.).

    You'll notice that there are just about a few pixels of the left side of two buttons to the right of the "Video" and "Audio" details boxes - these can be clicked. Is the shutdown option over there somewhere?

    yeah, the .avi output buttons have been broken in TMPGenc for a long time.
    I'll have to check it later at home Perhaps they've changed the batch control system. or maybe you're using the wizard :P
