  1. Hello
Id like to learn how to split a dvd manually using the extracted files I get with MacTheRipper. Ive just downloaded the new version, and figure if I can learn to do his myself by "building" a dvd Id learn a lot more about the files, technology etc.
then of course if it took too long to do Id look for a freeware/shareware program to do it for me.

thanks for a truely fine forum!

The reason that people don't build DVDs by hand is the same reason that people don't code in binary.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

im not sure what you are asking exactly.

its rather impossible to "manually" split a dvd. Instead you would have to use various apps to do it for you (most of which are terminal run)

hence the beauty of these backup apps
they run the code for you and you sit back and watch

  4. sorry, maybe I was not clear.

there are various files created by MacTheRipper. say 8 VTS files.

if they are over 4.2GB, I would have to put some on 'DVD-1', and some on 'DVD-2'.

can I just move them myself and then set some 'info' files so they will play? thats what I was getting at.

    thanks rotut

and deadsierra's answer still applies, you cant just take some files and arbitrarily put some on one dvd and some on another, it doesnt work like that. you would have to reauthor the files to be dvd compatible with something like sizzle or dvd studio pro (Not worth the effort involved)

No you cant just plop them in the dvd and have them play. they need to be "authored"

you can use dvd2one to do a DVD to 2 DVDr's to preserve the quality but its movie only mode. So if you dont mind loosing the menu and extras that would be the best way to split a dvd.

  7. Couldn't you use MacTheRipper to select only the chapters you wanted on each disc and extract those chapters to 2 separate discs? I know this would still be without menus, but saves the cost of DVD2One. Of course, anyone who wants to do ripping of any sort really needs to get DVD2One anyway.

After ripping the chapters, you would need to master the two halves of the DVD using Sizzle or DVD Studio Pro. You can't just stick some VOBs on a DVD and expect it to play. Once you have chapters ripped, you'll have 2 VOB files on your HD, one containing the first half of the chapters, and another with the second half. You then demux the VOBs using Extractor (I have a mirror here, as the project page is down) or ffmpegX, giving you .m2v and .ac3 video and audio streams. Then, you import these streams into Sizzle or DVDSP, and build your own DVD from scratch. You can choose if you want to make menus and such, or just have the video tracks that play automatically.

    Galactica...

How does one do this with DVD2OneX? I've used the join mode before but have never split one. I do need to do this though. Backing up my DVD of Lawrence of Arabia, the MTR ripped file of only the main feature is 7G! (The movie is 3-1/2 hours long). My first attempt at DVD2One on this was not acceptable...even at a low speed burn. Too much pixelation, blockyness. I think I need to split it into 2 discs if possible.

    Please advise

    Thanks

You put DVD2OneX into 'Join" mode and select the title containing the movie data. Then, in the drawer on the right side, you select Cell/Chapter/Layer, Check half the cells, then go to the audio tab and check all the audio options, and hit Start. Repeat for the rest of the the cells. You can also put it in Layer mode, do the first layer, and then the second layer (less checking to do). Remember to enable all the audio tracks before starting the process.

i might be nuts but i seriously dont see the features you talk about in dvd2onex... using version 1.2.1... do i need to upgrade? i dont see the cell/chapter/layer menu or window or anything saying that... i put the join feature and nothing like what you said came out... the audio/subtitle tray has 2 divisions... 1 on top that says audio, language, info and 1 in the bottom that handles subtitles....

i want to split a normal 9GB movie into 2 4.7GB discs... i dont want to lose the menus or anything.... just a normal backup into 2 discs...

ive seen this done on a pc... can we do it on a mac??

    thanks

Can we do it on a mac?

How do you think that solution came about? It was a bunch of macintosh users editing IFOs by hand. Sure there may have been a few windows users and some DVD-RAM tricks, but you have to realize that Apple shipped DVD-Rs in 733 G4s over 3 years ago.

My friend, you need to upgrade dvd2one to get the split/join fetures etc.

I am only aware of one app discomvobulator [if its even made still] that will do what you want which you can get here
