    I was at walmart today (canadian) and saw they were having a "summer Blow-out" and had dvds for $2.88. I thought i'd check it out, and my god, i've never seen so many cheesy names, cheesy box covers, unknown actors, and general all around crap in one bin before. it was truly a moving experience. it taught me never to go snooping around bargain dvd bins again, especially at wal-mart. If anyone sees a sale like that, my advice would be to run away, run far away, to the good old regular priced dvds.

    I can't. They will call to me, "Come on in, the waters fine." There may an Alfred Hitchcock film, a Magnificient Seven, or who knows what else. Sorry about your misadventure, but I still have hope. So like any old prospector, I'll keep digging, looking for the big score.
    Hello.

    If only they sold Troma movies at that price.....or at Wal-mart at all. Then I'd find it worth my time to search through those bins.

    The worst are the people who not only look through the bin, but stack the movies they have looked through in a nice, clean pile. They expect no one else to look at the movies until they are done. Word of advice. Don't try to get one of the movies at the bottom of one of their clean piles, causing them all to fall over in a huge mess.....then deciding you don't want the movie. It tends to upset them.....a lot.

    Tough [expletive deleted]! Until they have paid for them, they are not theirs. If it is not in their hand, it's fair game. People like that really piss me off....

    Ahhh, I feel much better now!

    This situation in particular is why Walmart has employees! Just to put the shit back in some order.... and I don't mean alphabetical!

    The local base exchange does just that. The bargain bins have all the on sale DVDs in a row. So if you can read, just read the titles. If you see something you think you like pick it up, peruse, decide you don't want it put it back in its place. Wow. State of the art....

    In all fairness, the local Wal-Mart has their "bargain bin" of crap arranged like that when they first put it out. It doesn't take long for people to reduce it to a heap.

    Our Wal-mart just has a big bin that they dump big boxes of DVDs into. They are in no order what so ever. So if you are wanting to find something good, you're probably gonna have to dig for a while.

  10. we have the "dvd dumpster divers" at my local walmart too.. some of the trashiest people spend an hour there digging through the entire bin.. like they're gonna find the original spinal tap dvd.. or some dvd+r9's..

    i picked up one movie out of the bin a few months ago, "brokedown palace".. it was only $5.88 + tax.. cheaper than renting it and then... oh wait..

  11. oh your god.. i just went to walmart a little while ago.. and they have, prepare to gasp.. one dollar dvd's! they werent in a bin, they were on a shelf next to the express lane (in which one bitch with 30something items went through, i asked her if she knew how to do simple math)..

    i could resist, i had to buy one.. "murder on flight 502", starring farah fawcett, sony bono & robert stack.

    my review;
    the movie is distributed by "digiview productions llc"
    nice FBI warning.. scrolling..
    semi-motion menu
    motion chapter selection menu
    "all play" button on main menu
    and previews of all their other $1 dvd's (the boy in the plastic bubble - travolta!)

    movie quailty;
    it looks like a good telesync
    full screen
    a bitrate around 5.25
    256kbps dolby digital 2.0 surround sound.. although it does sound like really loud muffled mono
    only 9 chapters

    other info;
    the discs had a nice screen printing, its a real dvd-rom (not a recordable)
    no macrovision, no CSS, no region coding, no RCE, single layer (weighing in at 4.03gb)
    the cast is like the size of half a regular dvd case, and sorta flimsy.. there was an insert that had the movie cover and minimal info on the back. the insert had the title of the movie & screen caps from the movie of the actors, it looked like it was printed with a crappy printer. the cases would be nice if they werent so flimsy and sold for 25 cents each.

    the profit margins on this dvd must be really low.. walmart has to get their cut, the cost of the disc, the cost of the case, the cost of the insert, production costs & the cost of the rights to distribute the movie (if they didnt just buy the movie outright).

    Probably cost more than the $1 to have the protection included, but I guess with this being such a "quality flick" who would care if it were copied and passed along for free... like AOL discs.......

    nothing like making a few bucks from cheesy '70s made for TV movies 8)

    I got the DVD of Born Innocent with Linda Blair (another TV movie but was a bit more daring in those days)

    The DVD is an edited/censored version - at the time it was originally shown, the gang rape scene with the plunger was said to provoke a real life raping of a teenager...but the girls used a coke bottle instead.

    The scene is in the movie but toned down.

    you're right.. whats the point of copying a $1 dvd? a decent quality disc is gonna cost you atleast 50 cents, then you have to pay for a case (a dime for a slimline cd case), then you have to wait.. for what? to save 40 cents?

    it would be quicker to just go to walmart and plunk out the dollar and just get it over with..

    @jeex - bless you, sir. you are a gentleman and a scholar.

    @village idiot - thanks, but I've got to make my own - you forgot the horns and the glowing red eyes... not to mention the blood dripping off the chin...

    (oh, dammit - I said "blood dripping off the chin", now Northcat is going to jump in...)

    I bet the "Kiss-Phantom of the Park" is lurking in there. I bought the vhs version at a supermarket checkout in 1989 for $4.99.
