gonna need more details, but sounds like a field order problem. Field order in that your source maybe top field first, but you encoded bottom field first or vice versa.

What steps did you use to encode (frameserve, encoder parameters, etc)?

I use the 3:2 pulldown and have read load of different ways
i choose NTSC DVD for 23.97 avi's obviously 29fps internally but get jerkyness every few seconds & gets progressivly worse as the movie goes on

If your source avi's are 23.976fps then they are progressive, and since you are encoding to 23.976fps (29.97fps) internally, your video stays that way so you don't have to worry about field order.

Double check that your source avi's are in fact 23.976fps. You can load them in virtualdub and hit file/file information to see.

Ensure that TMPGenc (I assume that's what you are using) is setup correctly. The source, on the advanced tab should be set to progressive (non-interlaced). On the video tab it should be set to 23.976fps (29.97fps internally) and it should be set to 3:2 pulldown while playback. Make sure you aren't enabling the 3:2 pulldown filter on the advanced tab. That is a common mistake and will definitely cause jerky playback.

How does the video look in TMPGenc's preview? Is the jerkyness there too?

Any other filters you are using?
