  1. I was going to use windows movie maker, to build trailer from 10+ avi files with, titles, transitions and etc stuff during the trailer
but i found that windows movie maker, does not allow me to set custom settings for the output file. There are only pre-defined settings for the dimensions and etc.

I need to save the trailer in different dimension, something like...220x140
so i need software which will allow me to put the avi files in order i want, to add titles, mark and transition effects and the most important, to allow me to save the file in dimension i want and as .avi (later i'll compress it with windows media encoder)

so please recommend me something to do that?

Run it through Movie Maker, then use Virtualdub to resize.

  3. but this double resizing, will lower the quality ? or no?

    the source files are, 352x266
windows movie maker, can save them only in 320x240, or 640x480 (and few more)

and i need it in something like 260x216 (or something around that )

Save them in the 320x240 format. You shouldn't really notice any difference if you resize using the resize filter and Lancosz (sp).

  5. If you're looking to actually get software to do it, I would recommend Adobe Premiere. I use it and like it a lot. Any video editing software can do this (besides windows movie maker), so take a look around this forum to see what programs others are using.

    Good luck

  6. Premeire is a bit of overkill and over priced.

Screenblast Movie Studio v2 (now owned by sony, version 3) is pretty good and easy to use for trailers. It is also about 1/10th the price.

VirtualDub is good, I've used it to do gaming trailers. No transistions, but then I not a big fan of fancy transitions. Looks cheap.

  7. ok i'll download Screenblast Movie Studio

but i also would like to know if this resizing have any influence on the quality....
and how does the resizing works?
just streching to the new size or using some algorithm which avoids changes on the picture?

Stretching would be a problem, shrinking usually is not. When stretched, the picture will get distorted. Usually, shrinking will not hurt the quality, it will just make it smaller.

He's right in a sense that you probably don't need Premiere. If you're looking to do A LOT of editing, going with a program like Premiere would be a good idea. For some random projects here and there, pick and choose from some cheaper programs or even free programs.

and what about the aspect ratio when shrinking?

  10. It shouldn't change, when shrunk, it will be the exact same video, except smaller. Just make sure when you adjust the horizontal height, you also change the vertical width the same amount, so its proportional.

  11. I downloaded Screenblast Movie Studio but i have problem with it
when i add .avi file to the media pool, it's ok, plays just fine

but when i add it to the time line, and play it, the picture is very weird, something like colorized mess.....

  12. I'm not familiar with the program, so maybe someone else can shed some light on it. But I would look for a render option. In some video editing software, the clip will not display/play correctly until you render the video.

  13. Never had that happen. If it imports ok then it should work ok.

    What codecs are you using.?
    Quote Quote
  14. The avi's are compressed with huffyuv codec

when i saved the avi's without any codecs, and tried again with movie studio, they were playing correctly

so, i guess movie studio does not support huffyv codec?

in the help is written that it may not support some kind of avi's

i guess adobe premiere does not have this sort of problems?

the other variant is to convert all huffyuv compressed avi's to non-compressed avi's but i'll need software who can batch process them all at once and plenty disk space (recommend me software which can do that)

I already learned the movie studio interface so, the best for me will be if i can add huffyv support into movie studio trough some kind of plug-in or something like that

I experience very little compatibility issues with premiere. One problem (for you) is that it is expensive. Try encoding your avi with a different codec, then try importing it into your software. Or like you mentioned, maybe there's a plugin that can help you out.

  16. well i didn't get answer at the sony support forum

seems i'll have to convert all files again, but they are too much to convert one by one with virtualdub

is there a way to automate ot process......to batch them and process at once
    Quote Quote
  17. there is a batch mode in VirtualDub, at the bottom of the save window.
    Quote Quote
  18. yes, but still have to add them one by one

btw, what's the difference between virtualdub and virtualdubmod?

  19. i downloaded the trial of adobe premiere, and guess what, the same problem as with movie studio
how is possible the leading products, to not supporf huffyv?

  20. It should support it (for me it did).
    1. Do you have the necessary codecs installed? (Don't ask me which one's specifically, cause i don't know... its a generic answer )
    2. Did you encode the video files yourself? They might be corrupted or encoded incorrectly. My tip would be to try to export a clip as "Uncompressed" i.e., not using any codec to encode. The file will be huge, but should play on just about anything.
