Teacher Blinds Pupils with Anti-Lice Shampoo

LIMA, Peru (Reuters) - A Peruvian school teacher blinded four of her pupils and left 20 suffering from severe eye irritation after she used a traditional hair shampoo to wash away hair lice, parents of the children and medical staff said Tuesday.

The state school teacher used a mixture of alcohol and seeds from the cherimoya fruit on the children, aged between 4 and 5 years old, Monday to rid a local bout of hair lice in the remote coastal town of Paijan, 355 miles north of Lima.

The mixture had run down into the children's eyes and "has affected four children who cannot see. It has damaged their retinas," an assistant nurse at a hospital in Paijan, who declined to be named, told Reuters.

The children were taken to a hospital in the provincial capital of Trujillo for treatment, the nurse said.

The four are totally blinded, but doctors have yet to determine whether this is permanent.

One parent, Natividad Mendoza, told RPP radio 20 other children had suffered serious eye irritation from the shampoo.

The anti-lice remedy is used along the impoverished coastal towns of northern Peru. Locals boil the cherimoya seeds, add them to alcohol and rub the mixture into children's hair.

Police said no action had been taken against the teacher.

There must be something nasty in the cherimoya seeds because the alcohol alone won't permanently blind you, unless you drink methanol.

I'm wondering how come it was up to the teacher to shampoo the kids? Where were the parents??

Maybe the kids' parents had to sign some sort of permission slip to allow the teacher to do it and waive any type of legal action if they could take any. You think the teacher would have used something to protect the children's eyes. For a method that's been used for years, you'd think there would be a specific process to have the treated parties protected from getting the concoction in their eyes, as the problem would most likely have happened in the past. It's not often, but once in a while I get soap in my eyes, but I do what I can to keep my eyes closed and hold my head back.

I think that the report is bogus. It says that the retinas were damaged. The retina is INSIDE at the BACK of the eye. Unless the teacher was injecting the solution into the student's eyes, I don't see how this could happen.

I think you can damage a retina if using liquid as the tear ducts allow fluid all around the eye, even in back. You can tell this especially if you've ever seen someone have certain types of eye surgery. They literally pop the eye out of the socket.

Doubt it. The eye is protected all around by thick fibrous coat called the sclera - the cornea at the front is less tough but still protective. The only reason why eye drops work is because you leave them in for hours.

Bear in mind that it was an assistant nurse that mentioned retina - she probably got the job because she already had the uniform from her days as a stripper

because a non-traditional shampoo would be S**T or Spooge. Exactly what is a "traditional" shampoo anyway? And how does the traditional shampoo fit into the equation when it state she made the normal impoverished version of the lice killing concoction? I may have missed something there. I'll have to go back and read it a few times more. Something those 4 kids can't do anymore.
