The best punishment for spammers is to make them compensate every single person who they've sent mail to. If we forced them to pay say $50 for every email they've sent to each person, you can bet that the level of SPAM on the net would fall off to nothing. They only do it because it is so easy to make a profit out of it. Cut off the revenue stream, and you kill the spammer. QED.

Nah. Keep the MPAA/RIAA out of it. Get private companies to buy the rights of people who have been spammed for compensation at say... $1000 per person per email, and then watch them go to collect.

Everyone seem to agree that 7 years is not enough for spammers, good. The worst thing is that he COULD be out after 3.5 years, thats a joke after invading peoples privacy in the way spammers do, and this guy did much more than only spamming.
I think the spammers are already coming out of hiding, i had like 25 spam mails in my inbox today, while right after the 7 year conviction it was down to around 15 or less. 3.5/7 years is not enough to scare them off.

They won't because there's a lot of opposition to letting the federal government get involved in policing the internet.

I personally think it can be regulated without bringing in any federal agencies. That usually ends up causing more trouble than it's worth in the long run. Look at how fucked up the postal service is as a result of that

Its the dumb-ass idiots who actually send $$$ to the spammers. Anyone who buys something from unsolicited spam should be banned access to any computer for life!! If the spammers go a couple of weeks without any suckers they'd go away fast enough.

There is one born every minute.

That is why my solution is so beautiful. Make them pay three times what they make on spamming to everyone they've spammed. Average out what they make among every person in their list. Say they spam 1500 people and they make a profit of $40,000 from it. Make them pay 200 dollars per person. They will be in hock to the tune of $20,000. Other spammers will learn from the example. Problem solved.
