Check out the replacement ink prices on the printers you can afford and let that help you decide.

it would help to know some of the models that you are looking at, so we can compare them and give your our advice. also take into consideration cost of ink like andyp1 said, and the fact that they dont last very long.

Interesting. They don't last?
I have a Canon 2500, 7years old, I think, still works, black and white scan, but still....
Also a 5500, at least 5 years old, color scan, color print of the scan, still works well. Set up as my fax machine.
HP, maybe. Some others, maybe. Canon, not so.
I, personally, think they make the best out and out printers, also. Never had one die, yet. Do have dead HPs.

in the price range of bout £150. replacement ink cartridges are nrm around £25 quid each arent they? how long do they last?
u say they normally break after bout a year - is this the whole truth - because if it is, thats very off putting.

I've had my Compaq A3000 multifunction printer for about 5 years now. No problems at all. The print quality is very good but the scan quality is average at best. Compaq's printer line was bought out by Lexmark though, which is bad because Lexmark has just about the most expensive ink cartridges on the market. But I just use the refillable ink so it doesn't effect me, and damn that stuff is cheap.

Whichever one you do decide on, check the number of carts and the price per. If it has individual tanks, one for each color, then only the one out of ink needs replaced, bye-em-bye, the printer will tell you you are low on another color, replace it.
Spending 25 quid because you have run out of yellow, still have plenty of blue and red, sucks.
Individual tanks generally hold more per than a tri color does, and is cheaper for the 3 than a single tri color.. And, too, the tanks are just that, tanks, printhead is a seperate cradle like device. At least as far as Canons go, a new printhead, with 3 tanks of ink, goes for about 45 USD, less than, say, an HP 78 cartridge, nearly 60 bucks.
Most newer printers are coming with smaller and smaller cartridges, run out sooner, buy new more frequently, they make tons of money.
Again, I have had HPs die on me, no Canons.
Cheers,
George
