I'm stuck with a MicroAdvantage 8X Superdrive (a BTC DRW1008IM) that won't even get to the point of burning a coaster let alone a usable DVD.

It plays DVDs and burns CDs very well, but everything locks up when trying to burn a DVD. I've tried the Roxio, Pinnacle and Nero software, all with the same results.

MicroAdvantage has exchanged the drive twice, so I am now working with the third drive (which they tell me was specifically tested before they sent it out to me). They also sent me some media which worked for them, but it still doesn't work for me.

My computer uses a MachSpeed V6DP motherboard with an Athlon 2400+ processor and 512 meg of RAM. I've updated the VIA driver without helping my problem.

Any suggestions would sure be appreciated.

I've finally got the drive to burn a DVD.

Success came after once again downloading the latest VIA drivers and installing them.

My first try at updating the VIA drivers must not have used the correct files.

  3. My understanding is that VIA ide drivers aren't that great. A few different places say it's better to use the standard ms ide drivers.
    Blah, blah, blah
