  1. I am interested in buying the 500w dvd player and one of my main concerns is what type of media have people used succesfully for SVCD, VCD's. I had a sony dvd player before and only one type of cdrw media worked. I don't want to make the same mistake twice. My main questions are: CDR media (brand names), CDRW media (brand) names.....and if there is anything i should stay away from. Any info would be extremely helpful

I personally use Kodak and Verbatim for long-term/imortant storage because of their PhthaloCyanine & Azo dye.

Most brand-names for not-so-important stuff. Lately Memorex (Spindle) and Imation has been giving me coasters

I've just recently ordered a spindle of 100 CD-Rs with the "Vivastar" brand name - these specifically claim to be compatible with Sony DVD players. I'll report back when I've had a chance to test the claim first hand.

I do think that some brands are better than others. However, I shop more for the dye and reflective layer types.
In my experience with my player and those of my friends, I have found that the Phthalocyanine dye on a gold reflective layer seems to work best. Being more expensive, though, I usually buy Phthalocyanine dye on a silver reflective layer. I have yet to try the newer Advanced Phthalocyanine dye (True Silver).

My choice of the "Vivastar" brand wasn't random. I'd heard that these use a new dye, and that some people were having success with them on Sony DVD players. I did a search for the brand name and found a UK site selling that brand *and* making a specific claim regarding Sony compatibility. So, I thought I'd give them a try - still waiting on delivery though, after a week.

Just to follow up on my earlier messages...

I've now had the chance to try out the "Vivastar" brand CD-Rs on my Sony DVP-S525D player, which has had a 100% failure rate so far with every previous CD-R brand I've tried.

To test it, I created three disks: an audio CD, a VCD and an SVCD. The Sony happily played the first two, and was able to read but not play the last (looks like the Sony just doesn't understand SVCD). In in all three cases the Vivastar disk was readable, so in that regard it was a 100% success.
