Is there anyway I can encode hardsubs to video in the black letterbox space below the video in TMPGenc? I will be cropping the image in TMPGenc so Im not sure how this is possible? Is it? I could use some help.
I was going to filter the video though VirtualDub using the subtitle filter but I would think the minute I crop in TMPGenc it would cut off the subs.
I am doing a dump from an old anime laserdisc and I dont see a need for soft subs as there isn't much that needs to be subbed anyway. Besides I have had nothing but trouble trying to get soft subs to work properly when I try to author a dvd with them.
Is it possible to crop the video in virtual dub and then have the subs outside of the picture? (Did that make any sense?) Argh!!! I've bee trying to wrap my brain around this before I spend any serious amount of time encoding.
Any help would be appreciated

Look, let me explain something. I'm not Mr. Lebowski; you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the Dude. So that's what you call me. That, or Duder. His Dudeness. Or El Duderino, if, you know, you're not into the whole brevity thing--

You can crop and add black borders in virtualdub and then add the subtitles (but personally I prefer to do it in avisynth). Then don't crop in TMPGEnc.
In virtualdub first add the null transform filter and crop the picture as you wish. Then add the resize filter and select the checkbox expand and letterbox image. In the new width and new height set the dimensions you got after cropping (if you don't want resizing) and set frame width and frame height to your destination full frame size (for example 720x480).
Then add your subtitles.Ronny -
You could just force the soft subs with dvdlab pro (works for me using srt files)
