  1. Dutch PC Magazine did a large test of DVD Media, this time a technical one testing PI errors etc..

    Testing was done with 2 writers (Sony 510 and Plextor 708) and the results for several media can be seen here:

    DVD+R Media with Plextor:
    http://app2.pcmweb.nl/pcm/extra/nr6_dvdplextorplus.htm

    DVD+R Media with Sony:
    http://app2.pcmweb.nl/pcm/extra/nr6_dvdsonyplus.htm

    DVD-R Media with Plextor:
    http://app2.pcmweb.nl/pcm/extra/nr6_dvdplextormin.htm

    DVD-R Media with Sony:
    http://app2.pcmweb.nl/pcm/extra/nr6_dvdsonymin.htm

    The last column in these tables summerizes the results:
    PIE = Parity Inner Error
    PIF = Parity Inner Failure
    SJ = System Jitter
    Eind =endrating of media from 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest)

    Some conclusions by the Magazine (not mine!):

    - Sometimes large differences between Plextor and Sony with same media, especially with DVD-R (Sony better with -R media then Plextor)

    - The variation in good and bad writing results is with DVD-R larger than with DVD+R. So you have to be more picky with -R Media for your writer. The Magazine claims this is because of the more strict ADIP DVD Media ID coding rules of the DVD+RW Alliance resulting in better recognition by DVD+R writers of DVD Media (DVD-R manufacturers and/or brands selling the media can choose their own ADIP codes, not always resulting in the best writing strategy).

    For this reasons they advice the average user to buy +R media instead of -R. If you buy -R you have to make sure you stick to known quality brands/manufacturers that work well with your writer (TY, MCC).

    What is interesting is their test samples do not include media made by CMC. Seeing as rebadged CMC seems to be all you can on local store shelves these days, I'd think they'd try and test that too.
