  1. I'm heavily looking for a possibility to rip out just one field from PAL MPEG2 (DVB) streams without reencoding. So that I get a 720x288 MPEG2 stream very fast. Afaik it should be technically possible, because with interlaced streams the IBP pictures are encoded in seperate fields anyway.

    Somebody can help?

    Thanks a lot,
    aphex.

(I'm recording series and stuff with DVB-T and don't need the second field because of watching with the computer. I don't have the time to convert them to DIVX, but interlaced streams need double the space...)

I don't think it is possible without reencoding.
Most interlaced mpeg2 streams are still frame based
encoded, they only use a flag to tell the decoder that
the frame should be decoded as interlaced fields.

You'll get better quality even when watching on
a computer if you keep both fields. The PC can
deinterlace on the fly at playback (using any
DVD playing software). At still scenes when there
is no movement you get better resolution with
full frames by using adaptive deinterlacing.

I am not sure if it is possible without reencoding. Best bet is to use software to modify the streams on the fly during playback or find a very fast mpeg2 encoder.
