  1. Is there a way to rip with the subtitles? My whole goal is to convert DVD to VCD. Quality seems best with DVD2AVI over FlaskMPEG (DVD>DIVX>VCD(MPG) ), but I can't get subtitles. Or what settings should I use on FlasKMPEG when wanting to bypass the DIVX portion and go straight into MPG? Thanx in advance.

  2. You can do it with dvd2avi but its a bit more completed you have to frameserve with virtual dub. The quality it pretty good. The website is http://www.flexion.org .

  4. I followed all the directions on the flexion.org site but I still don't get any subtitles (I assume I should be able to see them in TMPGenc while it's encoding right?) I don't see them in the MPEG-1 file either.

Also I followed all the directions but when the screen 'pans' I get these horizontal lines (like venicen blinds) across the screen. From what I’ve read/heard this is due to interlacing but neither the flexion.org of the vcdhelp.org guides seem to cover this… Any ideas

  5. Well I am not too shure what you should do you should be able to see the subtitles in Virtual Dub as well (do you apply the subfilter) as for tmpgenc try this (not shure) go to settings-------->Advanced--------->Video source type and then change it to Interlace because thats what you said you had. Well good luck.

  6. 1) Ok, I'm making progress I can now see my subs in the Vitrual Dub output window and in TMPGenc when I frameserve. But a new problem as developed. I have a K6-2 500 (slow plan to buy computer next week) but normally for a VCD it's 8x the run time (ie. 75min DivX -> ~10hrs to encode).

This is my first frameserve encode but my 75min DVD rip comes up at 30hrs to encode (at motion detect set to lowest quaility)!!! I want to use 2-pass VBR for future rips but don't have 3 days to encode

    2) Also the flexion.org guide has frameserve to TMGPenc, make a m1v/mpg video only file, then multiplex the video + audio -> MPEG-1 VCD file.

Can't I just frameserve the video to TMPGenc and choose the ripped wav file for the audio and do it all in one step? Seems easier.

  7. Yes you can. You can also add the wave file in virtualdub by clicking on audio and then wav and then put the wav file you got with dvd2avi in there. I have found that when i load the audio in virtualdub rather then tmpgenc i don't get out out of sync with the vidoe as i sometimes do with loading the audio in tmpgenc. Hope this helps.

  8. I have been trying to follow the directions at that link myself (rented Once upon a time in China) and I see the subtitles in Vdub, and I have loaded in the filters they ask for.

But I cant seem to get TMPGEnc to accept the .vdf file that I created when I started the frame serve. Very frustrating! I wish they would have an entire friggin section devoted towards Subtitle. Doom9 and flexions sites have not worked out for me.

  9. 1) Did you d/load and install the VFAPI codec for TMPGenc in the same directory as TMPGenc?

    2) When you setup framserving do you name the file xxx.vdf, that is actually manually type the extension, because VDub won't add it (this was my problem)

    3) If you made it this far I assume you installed registered teh VFAPI codec, but might want to double check.

I've been able to rip an Anime DVD and make a VCD with subtitles. Took a while to get all the settings, details right. But I think I've got it down now.
My only problem seems to be 'somehow related' to the interlace settings. Every few seconds I get these 'horizontal lines' across the screen (usally on the edges on objects during a pan). Not sure how to get rid of them (although I managed to do it by accident

It's so much easier to use Smart Ripper and FlaskMPEG for subtitles. Just rip the Whole DVD in file mode to a folder, then use FlaskMPEG with AVISynth to frameserve right to TMPGEnc with the subs there, or just use FlaskMPEG to export to any of your favorite formats for further processing.

May sound like a stupid tip but you said vdf and it's vdr. Just making sure your problem isn't just a typo of some sort.
