  1. I have a Digital Research DDVDRW8D which from doing a little searching is an optorite DD0401. I found firmware for the optorite including :

    110E
    120E
    130E

When I try flashing all three I get an incorrect bin file message. The 120E and 130E are only windows executables. The 110E has a bin file. Is there anything else I can do. There seem to be no DOS flash utilities for the drive.
Maybe someone can recommend a different file. I've also read that the drive is Sanyo CRD-BPDV3 drive. Maybe someone can point to upgrades for that drive are located.

    Thanks

  2. What firmware are you currently running right now? By answering that question you will be able to determine exactly what drive you have. If you have an Optorite DD401 drive the firmware will be either 1.00E, 1.10E, 1.20E, 1.30E, 1.30I

The 1.30E is specifically for Optorite brand burners and will not work with your rebadged drive. You'll need to use 1.30I. 1.30I disables the HD-Burn funtion on your burner, but if you don't use HD-Burn then it is no big deal. I have a Magicspin rebadged Optorite drive and I'm using firmnware 1.30I. I don't use HD-Burn so I can live without it. This firmware works perfectly for me. 50+ burns with 0 coasters. Burns at 8X with 4X Imation DVD+R media.

You also have one other option of using 1.20E. (This iwll keep the HD-Burn). You'll need to do a search for it here and find the DOS version that is floating around. It will work with your rebadged drive.

BTW, you can find out the firmware of your drive by using NeroInfo Tool, or DVDInfoPro.

  3. donkey_puncher,

Thanks for the info. When I run the flash utility it comes up as 0057. Not sure if I'm reading it right. I'll have to use Nero to get the proper firmware. I'll have to do a search for the 120E. The drive is by Digital Research but the label on top says Magic Spin and also Top-G.

    Thanks again

I'm not sure what that 0057 means from the flash utility. It looks similar to the BTC 1008 firmware, although I think the latest BTC firmware is 0056. So just download DvdInfo Pro from http://www.dvdinfopro.com/ and it will identify your firmware.

If the firmware is 0054 or 0055 then your drive is made by BTC.
If the firmware is 1:10E, 1:20E etc than you've got an Optorite drive.

  5. Funny, I just flashed a BTC and Nero reports the firmware a 0156.

Pretty sure that the drive said Magic Spin and also Top-G on top. Of course it was only $89 and for use in a computer here at work and a spare so I can haul files back and forth to home. This way when I'm slow here I can load stuff off of the DVD-RW and work on it here and reload to finish (author) at home.

    Cheers

  6. Looks like you have a BTC drive... just like mine... A friend and I both bought drives.. same day... same store... one behind the other on the shelf... Mine is BTC.. his is Optorite... Both work once you get firmware update.... You need at least 057... anything before that was terrible... The latest is 258 on BTC site... as of today www.btcusa.com
