I am building a new PC for my mum and will be installing XP on it. Is it possible to install all XP critical updates offline. ie download an executable file on my pc at home and then run it on the new PC with xp installed before I connect it to the internet. 2 reasons I want to do this, firstly it means I do not have to connect to the internet whilst the machine is vulnerable and open to attack, secondly she only had dial up so it would take a considerable amount of time to download the updates on her connection.

Your school should have a support agreement of some sort with MS.
Check with your sysop. Otherwise your friendly dealer might accidently lend you the XP critical updates CD set. -
I have wanted to do the same thing as I frequently rebuild my test machine. Although I've searched everywhere I haven't found a way to get around Windows Update "feature". About all I've been able to do is get a stable updated image and burn an image backup to jump start the rebuild each time.
Good luck and if you find anything make sure and post it. It seems like Mr. Gates assumes everyone has broadband coonectivity for downloading his 20 - 30 gigs worth of patches. -
Checked with our computer centre here and they dont have the XP critical update CD unfortunately. If the CD is free for download I dont understand why microsoft cant put it online.

well i know this is a downloaded cd but you could possibly try this.

Isn't the reason they're not available offline to general users is because M$ is tracking who is updating what and with what serials? I understand having the discs available to enterprise systems, but not so for home users. However you would think that with all the exploits there are in vanilla XP they'd almost be forced to release an offline patch for home users who call to abuse them of this atrocity

why not just manually download the patches?
go to the download center, select your OS. Search on "updates"
go to each KB and click download.
I know there's an easier way, but I just can't find the dang link for some reason. Basically, it's the enterprise download area, so all of the updates are listed for manual downloads.
:edit:
OK, they changed it again
Go here and select you OS
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp
click search
click add to all the updates you want
Click your download basket
save them to where you want
read this

Try here.
"Choose from a variety of updates that you can distribute over your network. This site is your one-stop location for Windows updates and enhancements, as well as Designed for Windows Logo device drivers."
It looks like it works just like WindowsUpdate, but you can specifiy the OS and place the updates you want in a "download basket" and download them all to one location. -

folks,
i just received my update cd today and it has the security updates through february 2004. although this is not completely up to date it is the 80 for the 20.
the disk includes:
windows xp sp1 update
security roll-up through feb. 2004
direct x 9.0b
windows mediaplayer 9
this cd is great because:
1. i do not have to hope some one has broadband when i go try and fix someone's operating system or other random issues. this cd has the updates for for all windows operating systems from windows 98 to xp sp1. and i already have all of the other programs/drivers/etc. that i need when working on somebody's computer.
2. this cd saves all kind of time because you do not have to download all the updates. the only problem is that you have to install sp1 to install the security updates. but, since sp1 is included on the disk it is not that big a deal.
3. i do not have to hope someone has broadband!
this cd can be ordered free of charge from microsoft at:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/protect/cd/order.asp
this is the same address that someone posted above.
i am a happy camper. -
You might check out your bookstore. There is a magazine called 'Windows XP' that is printed in the UK. They always have at least two CDs of Trials and some full versions of older programs (with an offer to upgrade to the latest version for a reduced price). Sometimes they offer disks (usually DVD) with upgrades for the most popular Video cards, printers, etc. One time they had a disk with all the windows xp upgrades, and critical updates up to their publishing date.
I remember reading in the magazine that they will continue to do this at appropriate times. Im hoping they will have the Service Pack 2 that is due out soon.If it works, don't fix it. -
I got a security update disk directly from microsoft.com. Someone on here posted the link about 2 months ago if I remember right. I filled in my address and phone # and that was it. No serials or anything. I got it last week.
It comes with:
SP1a
Direct X 9
Windows Media Player updates
Security updates
Don't know what else is on there haven't finished loading yet.
Here's the link to it:

You can actually patch your windows installation Cd with Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 2 Beta... All you need is a CD burner and the downloaded service packs.
What you are left with is a reasonably well updated copy of Windows XP.
I keep it handy for those cases where I have to re install the OS.
Have a look at this link for instructions...
