Entire PC Freezes when converting AVI > MPG on TMPGenc

Hi,

Whenever i encode an avi file to mpg on TMPGenc, normally after about 11 minutes or so, (but sometimes at different points during the encoding process) the entire PC freezes and i am forced to do a hard reboot (switch it off at the wall and switch it back on again). I have tried decreasing the priority of the task, and turning hyperthreading support off on tmpgenc, but i still get the problem, but it occurs later on than 11 minutes.

I have tried defragmenting the pc, checking it for errors and deleting any files i never use on the computer but with no success.

I have tried closing running processes (with the exception of the vital processes such as "explorer") but it still freezes up.

I don't think it has anything to do with the video file, because the same thing happens with every video i encode.

The computer doesn't just freeze when i am encoding video. If i am running a high process task, such as using "disk cleanup" or playing a game that uses a lot of CPU. The computer will freeze up at a random time during the task.

I think that my processor is at fault. :/

Sounds more like overheating , have you got plenty of cooling and ventilation around your pc.

Hi Andyp, and thanks for your very quick reply.

My pc has got a fan on the back of the tower, but it is in the corner of the lower half of my desk.

I'll try moving it more outward so that there is more ventilation, but if that doesn't work, are there any other steps i can perform to stop this problem.

Try taking the cover off and pointing a normal deskfan straight at the innards of the PC. This should help confirm if overheating is the problem or not. If it runs much longer like this then over heating is the problem.

And don't worry about being in the wrong forum, its not a problem

Video processing makes your processor work hard , when you are encoding your processor will be at 100% or thereabouts, I see you have a 3.06 processor so your PC cant be very old. I would say have a good look around your case and see if there are any places designed for fans to sit where you could add anymore , there are various things like side case fans , fans that sit in a 5.25 in bay and blow air in sound a good idea. Make sure any ventilation holes are not against the side of your desk.
Its basically a case of do what you can to get some extra cooling going on in there.
There is even such things as water cooling nowadays.

Fans are the cheapest option I guess .
I had a problem where my motherboard got fried , when I changed the motherboard and processor I bought a new case wit a fan at the back and in the side and there was a place for one in the lid also , it wasn't very expensive about £35 with PSU.

That might give you something to think about.

Woops, that can't have helped my CPU, the tower was packed in the corner of my desk. I've moved it further out now.

Bugster, this may sound like a dumb question but should i turn the pc off at the tower and at the mains before i open it up and point a fan towards it.

If overheating is the problem, then I think i'll buy some more fans, i don't think i'll go experimenting with water cooling yet.
