  1. I tried to open a vob file with tmpeg for a joke
and it worked. I set everything up and started the conversion ( vcd pal @ 1950 to fit on 2 cd`s ).
it took about 5 min to convert 30 min of movie ( video
only ). but it did not playback smooth.
since whem can tmpeg do this ??

    thanx for any advice

  2. VOB==MPEG(2 usally but with me i might make svcd's using reg mpeg1(vcd) mpgs to add multi audio and subbs).
But vob it usally a mpeg audio and video, but on dvd the smallest vob file is the subb file.

To your original question: TMPGEnc could always encode directly from the VOB (you may have used DVD2AVI beforehand, this created a d2v file which was a file that told TMPGEnc basically where the VOB was - nothing else!).

The main reason to use DVD2AVI before is however to extract the audio file you require. If one uses the same source for audio and video encoding, strange noises were noticeable in the finished encoded mpeg file.

Just speculation here, but if your motion search precision was set to "low" or "motion estimate search" TMPGEnc would be very fast.
