  1. Been trying to convert an avi to dvd.Tried TMPGEnc and Mainconcept but they both freeze and lock up my PC.Does anyone have any idea why this would do this? The only program that doesn't freeze is Nero Vision Express but recently been having problems with audio/video out of synch. Can anyone recommend a good encoder that I won't have problems with?

You are having trouble using probably the 2 most popular encoders that people use . I don't think the encoders are the problem , you've got something else wrong there.

I'm not sure where you would start but the encoders are NOT your problem.

Someone will have sugestions for you .

I'd suggest a reformat but that might be a bit premature at this point.

Find out what codec is used on the avi and make sure that it is installed.

Also, you may want to use Virtualdub to extract the audio as a wav file and use the avi as video and wav as audio in TMPGEnc.
