if my avi source is ntsc, and i live in pal land...what fps do i encode in using tmpgenc? ive read that whatever the source is, encode the same e.g

avi is 29.97fps - then select 29.97 in tmpgenc
avi is 25fps - then select 25fps in tmpgenc

but if the avi is in ntsc format.....surely it wont play right on my pal dvd player?

That where you are lucky compared to those that live in NTSC land. The majority of AV equipment (players, TVs etc) sold in most PAL areas is multi-standard. This means it will play both PAL and NTSC formats quite happily. In that case, if you have a NTSC frame rate avi, encode it to DVD format as NTSC and it should work fine. This saves the difficulties in doing NTSC to PAL conversions which is discussed repeatedley in the forums.

If your 29.97 source originated as Film you might be able to
Inverse Telecine it which makes it 23.976
If not , You can't really do it without removing frames .
PAL is made from NTSC by speeding it up to 25 fps
without changing number of frames , and fixing the audio to match.

There is a thing called PAL60 , but I'm not in PAL land so I dunno
    what the deal is there

i just checked my dvd player manual (its a smasung)

it says it plays ntsc format, and pal 60hz format

i can switch between the 2 in the options...the base of my question comes from juddery videos, ive tried to encode ntsc - ntsc, pal - ntsc, pal - pal etc and everything comes out juddery......i must be doing something else wrong then if my dvd player supports ntsc and pal, my dvd backups work fine i know its not the media im using as i know other people who hve used the same media with tmpgenc and had good results, my files play perfect in media player, they seem to screw up during the tmpgenc process, other than that sound is in sync and good quality everything else works fine its just the juddery thing, please help

  6. a lot of equipment supports both standards. the question is does your TV support NTSC. Most PAL equipment does but often only through one port, usually the RGB Scart connection.

Any other ideas for what. As you have been told and confirmed for yourself your equipment is capable of playing both NTSC and PAL media. Just convert it using the same framerate. So if you have an NTSC avi file convert it to an NTSC mpeg. If its 23.97 fps use the ntsc film template, if its 29.97 fps use the ntsc movie template.

am i supposed to be using the videocd (ntscmovie) template when i want to make a dvd? does it help get rid of judders? as i have always used the dvd templates, and had judders all the time, silly question i know but i thought the videocd template was for vcd's and i thought i would lose quality
