  1. Is it worth to pay the extra $ for the Sony extra features?
Philips is $300 while the Sony $600
    Any advise?

Just think "flexibility vs. reliability" with those two choices. Also there are (almost) hundreds of choices now in the DVD Recorder market these days depending apon where you live. When I bought mine I had to think of it as an investment because they were SO expensive. Now....that is NOT the case.
No matter which route you decide to go....DO NOT throw away your DVD Player. In my opinion if you use your recorder to record and your player to play....you and your recorder will both live longer and happier lives.
DO NOT buy whatever you buy based on it's playing abilities....buy it for it's recording abilities/compatibility.

  3. I have the DVDR75 & am very happy with it. But you need to ask yourself, "what do I really want to use it for & how much am I prepared to pay"

If you really only want to record to DVDR, they both do that. Buy the Philips

If you want the extra features & are prepared to pay the premium buy the Sony.

If you want a little more piece-of-mind on the reliability front, pay the extra for the Sony. Philips have had reliability issue.

An the other hand - you'll get at least a years waranty with the Philips, it should easily last 2-3 years (most reliability issues likely will be in the first 6 months anyway) especially if you follow hech54's advise about not using it as the main player. The Sony may well last a few years more...but will you still be recording to DVDR's in 4 or 5 years time? By then DVDR will be the old VHS!
Bad advice is pricey...good advice is priceless
I can't warrant what camp this falls into, but, for what it's worth, it's what I believe!
