just wondering...if i had a movie dvd file on my computer, would i be able to open and play around with the contents even tho i dont have a dvd player on my computer? if so, would i require any special codecs? what about if i had a data dvd file?

yes -- you can do anything you want but burn it.
yes -- you need a mpeg2 codec and most likely an ac3 codec
