Howdy
I'm following Sefy's guide on ripping my DVD (Backup of Courseand when I get to the section on Tmpgne on loading the d2v file as video source I get a message saying "TMGPEnc won't open the .d2v file file format is not supported"!
So, I went to the bottom of the "How To" guide and looked at the Problems section. I followed the instructions there when one receives that message and re-downloaded the Tmpgne VFAP file etc etc...
Still a no go.
So I ripped the file again and in the first dialogue box that comes up with smartripper the message reads:
ASPI-Adapter available
try to unlock drive ...
Error: Read DVD Structure
test file access...
VIDEO_TS.BUP -> Win_IO readable
VIDEO_TS.IFO -> Win_IO readable
VIDEO_TS.VOB -> Win_IO readable etc etc
Is this my problem, ie that SmartRipper cant crack the code for this particular DVD??
I went and checked on one of my OTHER DVDs that I OWN and SmartRipped that (same process) and no problems at all?
Any help would be appreciated. What good is a DVD if you cant back it up I say ;>

Play the movie with a software dvd player few seconds or a minute to unlock the drive.

Yep
Ive already put a DVD in and played it for a while as per the instructions at the bottom of Sefy's guide.

the disc is probably mastered poorly or in an unorthodox way(main chapters across multiple titles). half the porn i rip displays that same error, but it still works

Have you tried using Sector Extractor 1.2 instead ? i've never had it fail on me before.

Don't worry about these messages from Smart ripper. I sure get this message from some DVDs, but my rips have been perfect (thanx to Sefy.
so, the fault lies elsewhere.
Again, check that ur programs r installed in the SAME FOLDER, as Sefy has stressed.

Oh, on a side note, try checking if you have the latest ASPI Layer installed on your system, sometimes an OLD aspi layer can cause problems when ripping.

I too am having trouble with SmartRipper not being able to unlock the drive. I downloaded the file forceaspi17.rar into a generic folder, but how do I make sure that the ASPI layer is 'installed' on my system? Thanks.

You need to run the installation batch file for your PC, usually for 9x system it's INST-9X.BAT and for the NT based such as 2000/XP, it's the INST-NT.BAT, when the installation is done, you must restart the system for teh changes to take effect, i'd also recommand using the ASPICHK to see if the ASPI is installed properly.

I ran into this problem while following Sefy's guide. There is a newer version of one of the programs that you need (I think it's DVD2AVI). If you're using the one linked from Sefy's guide, you'll get that error. It might be TMPGenc... don't think so though. I don't think TMPGenc works with the .dv file from the older version of DVD2AVI. Other than that, Sefy's guide works pretty well. However, I can't seem to figure out how to change the aspect ratio. My picture always seems squished (everybody's too skinny). I don't know whether it's coming from my rip, my conversion, or my encoding...

swapmeet, in order for TMPGEnc to work with D2V files, they must be created from the same version of DVD2AVI that the VFP is used, or it will not work.
As for your Squished picture, if your movie is Wide Screen, then go to TMPGEnc Advanced and do these two changes:
Source aspect ratio = 16:9 Display
Video arrange method = Full Screen (keep aspect ratio 2)
i've created perfect Wide Screen VCD's using these settings every time!
