About the only advise I could offer on this, is you might want to remove yourself from the equation. I can understand you wanting to help your
friend and all, but if there is the possibility of him selling what you have, in good faith, backup'ed for him you can be at risk in a legal respect (I would guess, not a lawyer here).
However, since you did request info on 'protecting' the disc(s), you might want to check out the following, might get you started off on the right track.

if he's not bright enough to back up a dvd to begin with, which is pretty basic, i doubt if he's bright enough to do anything else with it.

Nobody makes a DVD Re-Crypter? Maybe you could contact the MPAA and see if they can point you to what they use.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore. -
DVD-R/W and DVD+R/W do not support CSS encryption keys. Currently this type of encryption is only available on factory pressed DVDs. From what I've read, the DVD+R standard may support CSS keys in the future, but as of right now what you want to do is impossible.

I know I "could" be wrong. But the probability that I am correct is MUCH higher. Say what you will...but between you and me, I know what's up.
