Hi I've been having a problem with the speed of my dvd burning and it's costing so much of the little time i have.....Here's my situation....I have an Liteon External 8xdvd dual drive rewriter (model LDW-851SX) and all necessary programs..(dvd decryptor, clone dvd) and plenty of hard drive space and memory (over 40gb) Anyway i've been transfering dvds to my hard drive with dvddecryptor so that they are ISO files but when i try to burn from the hard drive to a blank dvd-r (ritek 4x dvd-r) it takes almost 2 hours to finish!!! It's getting frustrating considering that burning from your hard drive should take only 10-20 minutes....Is there something i can be doing wrong...Do i need to change preferences on dvddecryptor???? Any advice would help SOOO much...Thanks alot

What interface does your external drive use? Those speeds sound more like USB1.1. Download Nero CD/DVD Speed and see what it says. Another one is Nero infotool 207. When you use that drive to play a disc, is that also slow?

My external dvd burner is obviously plugged into my USB hub which is why it's slow because when i plug it in it says "hi-speed usb device plugged into a non hi-speed hub" Also that i should add a "hi-speed usb host controller to my computer" i can't seem to find a way to enable DMA with this burner...is it because it's external....do i need to buy a "hi-speed USB port" or is there a way around it? Any suggestions PLEASE????

You need to buy a PCI card with USB 2.0. You can't just plug in a USB 2.0 device into a USB 1.1 port and expect to have a transfer rate of a USB 2.0.
Overall you should never use a external USB 1.1 drive becuase it is just too slow and causes to many problems. -
you can get usb 2.0 cards for $0-$20 from places like best buy, office max, fry's, etc. I purchased my 2.0 5 port card about a year ago for $20. I have seen them since then free after rebate or in the $10 range.
if you are going external, you WILL NEED a usb 2.0 card. No way around it. Basically, your 1.1 port is the bottleneck.
As far as software possibilities, in dvd decrypter make sure that the burn speed is greater than 1x (Although your bottleneck will slow it down). I have burned from an external hard drive to my internal dvd burner and it takes in the 1.5-2hour range (before I got my 2.0 card). I havent really tested burns with the 2.0 card since I got a dedicated 20 gig internal drive (free after rebate from compusa).
I know this is the reverse of what you are trying to do, but the bottleneck is the same. -
USB 1.1 transfers data at a maximum of 1.5mbytes per second.
USB 2.0 transfers data at a maximum of 50mbytes per second.
40X faster although you won't see all of that.
Make sure your USB Cable is 100% USB 1.1 or 2.0 certified. In a recent survey of "certified" cables, USB.ORG found that 7 of 11 cables failed their certification. A lot of false claims out there. I've heard Belkin cables actually pass certification.
I agree with eveything else said. Good comments from everyone. You need a USB 2.0 PCI card and a certified USB 1.1 (at least) cable. -
Sorry, I fat-fingered the USB 2.0 spec. It is 60mbytes/sec, not 50.

Maybe you could take apart your external drive's case, remove the drive, and mount it inside your case. It's just an IDE device. You might have problems if you're using a laptop though...

You don't have to buy a USB 2.0 PCI card. You can buy an external USB 2.0 hub. It HAS to explicitly say that it's USB 2.0 else the hub is probably USB 1.1. Here are some USB 2.0 hubs that I found on Froogle:

You MUST have USB 2.0 certified cables to go along with the USB 2.0 hub, too.
Good luck,

Uhh, yeah, I'm dumb.
For some reason, I thought he had a USB2.0 port & just needed more. Move along...nothing to see here...

So i need to get the USB 2.0 card and not the external hub huh??? Alright....Is it easy to install?

1) Put USB 2 card in pc. 2) Tyrn on pc. 3) windows autoinstall usb 2 driver. thats t.

If you have XP, I believe USB2 needs SPI to work automatically. May work with other OS's with the proper driver. USB2 cards install easily, especially under XP and SP1. There are not many USB2 hubs out there, and yes, a cheap USB1 cable can cause problems.

Forgot the mention the service pack par. XP SP1 and windows 2000 SP 4 is all you need.

Where is the slot to install the USB 2.0 card....All i see is my dvd rom drive...cd rom drive and floppy disc drive....I have a Gateway pentium 4 with Windows XP.....Do i need to take anything apart?? Any info will help...Thanks

You will have to open up the case, and put he card into one of the free white (pci) slits. if uncomofrtable doing it, take it into a shop and tell hem you want a usb 2 card installed. It is a quick and cheap job for them to do.

louris54, I see you are going to be a problem
Yes, open the case. Inside your computer at the rear you should see a row of horizontal connectors in a vertical strip. They are PCI slots. Should have your video card, modem plugged into some of them. Look for an open slot. A USB2 card will plug into one of these. You will have to remove a metal cover on the rear of the case to fit the card in. Plug in the card, and if you have XP and the SP1 service pack installed, you should be ready to go. I don't have any link handy for the proceedure, but I'm sure somebody here can give you one. If you are not sure, seek out a computer savy friend and they can set it up for you.
