1.everytime i put a new cd-rw in my writer, the adaptec programme tells me i must format it. when i do i lose approx 100mb of space on the disc. any idea what is happening here it does not sound right.
2. can i burn a cd-r to a vcd in multi sessions. if so how do i do it i,m using nero

You need to format the CD-RW for use with Direct-CD. This allows you to treat the CD-RW disc like a big floppy (i.e., you can write small bits of data on it whenever you want).
I personally don't find it useful so I don't have Direct-CD installed at all.

thanks for the reply. Is there something other than Direct CD I can use so I donot lose so much space on my discs.

You could simply not use packet writing for CD-RW and use them like ordinary CD-R (except erasable). You won't loose any capcity then.

I can't really help you with this... I've never installed Direct CD and my drive works fine. Perhaps you could try reinstalling your burning proggy (but just not install the Direct CD component).
