STANDALONE DVD RECORDER QUESTION

I would like to know if any of the experts out here know if any
company makes a DVD Standalone recorder that also allows you to record
video to a CD. In other words a recorder that makes DVD's and VCD's ??

There are a few VCD recorders, but they've been eclipsed by DVD recorders. Why would you want to record on CD's instead of DVD's, especially since the price of DVD's is dropping so quickly?

The Lite-On 5005 will record on all DVD formats except RAM, and can record VCD/SVCD on CDR/RW.

This is exactly what I was talking about. I think the other guy got confused and thought I wanted a vcd recorder only but I was curious as to whether a dvd recorder was made that also allows you to record to a cd as well in vcd/svcd format. Reason being some shows you really dont want on dvd but you could use cd-rw for a good many of them. I will check that link. Has anyone tried this unit as of yet???

I saw the LiteOn 5005 on the HarmonyComputers website for $332.
It records to either blank DVD/CD in the following formats--DVD, VCD, SVCD, and Audio cd. It also has DV inputs.

Also, I saw at Compusa they had a LiteOn VCD recorder, $99 blowout.
I was tempted to buy it just for the heck of it. It would be a heck of a deal
if it has a built in TBC, which could be used for a pass-thru.
Problem is I really hate CompUSA.

I've read some posts of problems with the Lite-on's, but that can also
be said about the Panasonics.

Well I read the review that tompika posted. Sounded more like a press release from LiteON than a real serious review. A little too gushing and lacking details.

So I went to the LiteON website. Again not nearly enough information.

So I downloaded the manual for the LVW-5005

Things I didn't like:

1.) No kind of flex control on recordings. In the case of DVD you are stuck with 1 hour, 2 hour, 4 hour and 6 hour modes. Want to record 2 1/2 hours? Well you will have to use the 4 hour mode. That blows. We need these stand alone DVD recorders to be more flexible than that! I mean they could have included at least a fixed 3 hour mode at the very least.

2.) No mention of any built-in filters or TBC

So that pretty much knocks it off my list since I'm not spending $300 plus dollars for a door stopper.

You want quality in a stand alone DVD recorder it is looking more and more like Panasonic really is the king.
