  1. Hi.

I'm having a problem burning SVCDs. I converted several DivX files into SVCD NTSC format using TMPGEnc, and then I burned them into an SVCD using Nero v.5.5.4.0. Nero had no problem accepting the files to be burned, and there were no errors during the burning process; however, when I tried to play my SVCD on my DVD-ROM, my DVD player kept getting stuck at the menu and would not proceed farther than that.

I've tried 3 different DVD software players, including Intervideo's WinDVD. None of them will play past the menu. I've also tried playing the MPEG-2 videos directly from Windows Media Player, but WMP simply spits out a "Could not find a combination of streams to render..." message.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. The only explanation I can find is that I slightly tampered with TMPGEnc's SVCD (NTSC) template. I had read on a webpage that said that, in certain versions of TMPGEnc, the SVCD (NTSC) template was incorrectly programmed and that I should change the template so that the "MPEG.Video.DisplayWidth = 0" and MPEG.Video.DisplayHeight = 0."

Is this what is making my SVCD not work? If so, what are the correct display width and height dimensions? Or is there another problem with TMPGEnc or Nero?

Thank you for any help you can give me.

  2. This is a problem with Nero.

Nero does not correctly author the pbc for still menus. They don't play properly on most software DVD players and even some stand-alone players. I would suggest that you avoid Nero still menus.

For those interested in what Nero does incorrectly, create an image of the VCD and then use VCDXRIP (part of VCDImager) to extract it. I can point out in the XML descriptor file what Nero does wrong.

    Regards.
