Well my first foray into editing/burning footage on the panny E100 hasnt turned out too well.

i copied three hours of music videos from video cassette onto the hard drive as one big file. i then made a playlist from this footage, this list amounted to 56 seperate tracks. burned to dvd using FR (2 hours 20 mins worth). i expected the resulting dvd to let me skip one track to the start of the next as you would with an audio cd ie there should be 56 discrete tracks on the dvd. what has actually happened is that there are only 23 chapters on the dvd, so if you want to miss a song and skip it you end up in the middle of the next track or even the one after that.

can someone tell me what i did wrong and what is the difference between a chapter and a track. Thanks for any help

  2. daveeb, there's the fine-print at the bottom of page 45 you might want to check out, under "After finalizing."

In order to customize your chapter breaks on the E100H, the program must be recorded in high-speed mode (again, check the manual on how to do this). You can then mark your chapters two ways:

    1. directly while viewing the program, using the "Marker" button on the remote
    2. as scenes within a playlist

You must then dub the program to DVD, using high speed mode (see manual). If you used #1 above, your markers will designate the chapters. If you use #2, your scenes will designate the chapters. BTW, you can't combine these two approaches -- that is, the unit will not "accumulate" your markers from a program and a playlist.

    Hope this helps.

I am planning to buy one. Let me know if you are successful in inerting chapter marks wherever you want, thanks.

  5. I personally haven't tried a direct-marked dub to DVD, but have done the playlist option. I prefer it 'coz I can edit out commercials at the same time I plant my chapter markers. Plus, there's no risk of ruining the original video program.

Hint: You can use the direct markers as an aid in constructing the playlist scenes. As I watch the program, I mark the start and end of commercials. Later, when I build the playlist scenes, I use the navigation buttons on the remote to quickly jump between markers, and use their locations as the endpoints of a playlist scene, which ultimately become DVD chapters.

Thanks JET, you've been really helpful.

one other question if you don't mind. i've noticed that when i switch on the machine, the audio in the pass thru signal kicks in almost immediately but the video takes around 2 minutes with just a black screen beforehand. have you experienced this delay or any idea what it could be caused by.

    thanks

  7. might just want to make a dvdr from the panny (or use dvdram) and then use your computer (with TMPGENC DVD Author) to make menus, chapters, etc.). Does a great job and is more compatible with other players.

This defeats the purpose of a DVD Recorder.

  10. Not really (defeating the purpose), if the purpose of your recorder is to capture perfect quality video from VHS tapes and TV and then semi-professionally author them so that they look nice. I (and others) have small businesses where we take client's home videos (weddings, etc.) and turn them into DVD.

Also, some users (including myself) have noted compatibility problems when playing material recorded from the panny on stand alone dvd players. To "fix" this, I/we use TMPGENC DVD Author to reauthor the material and burn a dvd that will play on the majority of standlone dvd players.

Your right it does defeat the purpose of puchasing a dvd recorder, but it's true. The Panasonics are known to have an issue with compatibility and that is why I puchased a dvd burner for my computer. Once I started making discs using the burner the problem was no more.

I use my Panasonic e50 for capture only. It does a great job due to the built in filtering and TBC controls built into the unit. That's why a hard disk version of the Panasonic doesn't work for me. I still have to author using my computer if I want at least a 90% compatible disk that will work work in most dvd players.

Here is a thread where people are talking about the dvd ram format and doing caps to ram and then transferring to dvdr on the computer.

  13. dave, I sympathize. The delay is a little annoying, but I don't think it's longer than 10 seconds. I don't know exactly what the unit is doing during that time.

No it really is at least 2 minutes sometimes much longer. Audio kicks in straight away after the self check. got a "error has occured" message first time it happened and also always get the error message if i try and do timer recordings (which fail). Its going back tomorrow, hopefully for a swap.
