I've been using the Huffyuv/Virtual VCR/Xcapture combo for several months now with excellent results.
NTSC, 704X480, 29.97, s-video on a P4 2.4 running at 2.8 Ghz, WinXP SP1. Input is from a Phillips S-VHS VCR that I use as a tuner for Comcast Cable. I can let it run until my 50 gigs of space is full while watching it with the smart T preview enabled, with rarely a frame dropped, and no problems with audio synch. I love Virtual VCR!
Recently though, I started noticing hesitations in the preview with some frames dropping. When I looked at the stats I realized that Huffyuv was no longer compressing.... Transfer rates over 20,000,000 and Compression at 0.98x! That's with s-video input on my Pixelview Xcapture card... which, up until now, has been a great performer.
If I switch to the Composite input, it works ok... Transfer rates around 8,800,000, Compression around 2.29x... with nothing else changed.
I can't say that I've ever noticed that kind of a difference between s-video and composite before. Could it be a sign that my capture card is acting up? I can't figure it out. I've uninstalled and reinstalled capture drivers, Virtual VCR, Huffyuv v2.1.1 (with and without the CCESP patch) and v2.2.0.
I prefer the quality of the s-video input, but with those kind of Transfer rates, I'm better off using Uncompressed, which, is capturing smoother than Huffyuv - with s-video input.
Any ideas anyone?
BTW, Virtualdub shows a Compression rate of 2.2:1 using huffyuv with s-video. But I can only get it to use 320x240.

Just a follow up on this in case anyone else ever sees this problem. I removed the Xcapture card and installed my Osprey-100 (bt8x8 card). They Huffyuv problem I was having didn't appear. S-video compression was just fine. So it appears to be a problem with my Xcapture cards s-video input.
Time to consider buying another card, I guess. :/
