Looks like this is HPs 1st dual format out of the gate.

Any ideas as to whether or not it's a rebadge?

The first drives should be rebadged NEC's but when Philips/BenQ get a drive out with support for 8x/4x DVD-R/RW my guess is that HP will switch.
BTW if anyone get a HP dvd420i which is OEM NEC (should show up as 420n) please check if bitsetting works and extract the firmware (using tdb's flasher) and send it too herrie as I'm sure that would make a lot of NEC ND-2500A owners happy. -

I assume the ND-2500A flasher works in the same way as the ND-1X00A and in that case you just need to download the NEC ND-2500A flash program from tdb.rpc1.org and copy it to a DOS boot disk. Reboot with this disk and type:
NEC2X00A -sec -mas -out hp420n.bin
If you have your DVD writer on your primary IDE channel type -pri instead of -sec and if you have it as slave instead of master type -sla instead of -mas.
