Looks like this is HPs 1st dual format out of the gate.

Any ideas as to whether or not it's a rebadge?

  3. The first drives should be rebadged NEC's but when Philips/BenQ get a drive out with support for 8x/4x DVD-R/RW my guess is that HP will switch.
BTW if anyone get a HP dvd420i which is OEM NEC (should show up as 420n) please check if bitsetting works and extract the firmware (using tdb's flasher) and send it too herrie as I'm sure that would make a lot of NEC ND-2500A owners happy.

Be glad to check it out if someone could give me a little info on how to do so. I picked up one of these last week and am extremely happy with it so far. Couldn't beat the price either. Thanks to poor customer service at my local WalMart I picked it up for $75 plus tax. Wasn't really in the market since I just bought a Lite-On 411s and modded it to an 811s but I just couldn't pass up a deal like that.

Okay, it appears that DvdInfoPro let me set the default to DVD-ROM. Won't know for sure till I do a burn. I have several scheduled for later today, so I'll update here if it worked.

  5. I assume the ND-2500A flasher works in the same way as the ND-1X00A and in that case you just need to download the NEC ND-2500A flash program from tdb.rpc1.org and copy it to a DOS boot disk. Reboot with this disk and type:

    NEC2X00A -sec -mas -out hp420n.bin

If you have your DVD writer on your primary IDE channel type -pri instead of -sec and if you have it as slave instead of master type -sla instead of -mas.
