Does anyone know what a cerebral infraction is!? My girl sent me an email from the hospital (She went in for an MRI) and said that the doctor told her she had 3 cerebral infractions. I am at work, and can't find anything online about it so I was wondering if anyone knew...I'm sure I'll get the details later this evening, but I am going nuts trying to find out what it is. I know it's serious, but thats about it!!

Yeah, that don't look good. Hopefully it's a minor case...
Where in Japan are you? -
When she was bit younger she experimented...but nothing too serious. In the last few months she's had some headaches come and go, but only in the last couple days did it get serious enough for a hospital visit, and an MRI.

The only thing I know about cerebral infarction is due to heavy use of drugs over the years that it makes holes in your brain for example:
Cocaine use, alcohol abuse, head injury and bleeding disorders increase the risk of bleeding into the brain.[ -

I presume that as she's supposedly had three without you or her noticing anything untowards that she would have had a Transient Ischaemic Attack (aka a mini stroke - with usually complete recovery within 24 hours).
Her neurologist will give her the spiel, but it will probably include giving up smoking and stopping oral contraceptives (if either are applicable).Regards,

A cerebral infarction is basically a stroke -- an "ischaemic" stroke... i.e., where part of the brain dies because it doesn't get enough oxygen. Most often, this is due to a blockage of some sort (e.g., because a clot went down a blocked off one of the arteries to the brain).
The other type of stroke is a "haemorrhagic" stroke... i.e., bleeding into the brain.
If your girlfriend is YOUNG and has had cerebral infarcts, that is quite unusual. VERY unusual. I'm sure her doctor will do the appropriate investigations, but things like a clotting disorder or cerebral vasculitis are more likely.

She is young, if 34 is young. She has had headaches on and off for the last little while, but who doesn't when there are so many things going on in your life (Stress included). Anyway, the doctor here gave her just some pain killers, and asked her to relax. She goes back in next month for another MRI. I now wonder if this is something that can be fixed, either with medicine or surgery.

I'm surprised that low-dose aspirin was not mentioned to her.

I just got off the phone with her and she told me that she is having an MRA. Not sure what that is and how that is different (Google time). Anyway, the hospital she is going to is the number 2 brain hospital in Japan (Not sure where number 1 is). I have some pretty heavy duty pain killers from Canada that I brought over, but I am not sure whether it would be smart to give her things her doctor hasn't recommended. Anyway, thanks for the info...if things get better (OR worse
) I will will be sure and let you know...

If she truly has had strokes and is only 34 years old, she needs a stroke work up as an inpatient...
Perhaps the MRI didn't actually show infarcts... just some non-specific changes which "may" indicate infarcts. In the absence of a clear history or focal neurological signs, it seems unlikely that she would actually be strokes at her age. As such, a repeat MRI scan would be useful for looking for any progression of the lesions (e.g., other causes such as vasculitis).

@beavereater,
It's good that you feel like this place can be an outlet for your thoughts. Better than keeping things bottled up. Good luck. -

Yeah...this is where I vent. I know advice given here is not ment to be taken as professional advice...but sometimes I can get a better picture of whats going on. Ya never know when a doctor might be a member
of DVDRHELP and lay out a little advice. Anyway, she is feeling better...and knowing that, I am feeling better.

If I'm not mistaken I believe Vitualis is either a Doctor or a medical student.

Yeah, he is, but I'm sure even he will tell you without specific details it's insane to recommend something that isn't intended for the recipient (and when I say specifics I mean either the drug or the patient)
