  1. DVD burner - LG4040B with latest Firmware

    DVD media - Ritek G04's

Software - Ver. 3.1.7.5 beta Dvdshrink for ripping/compressing and burning with Nero 6.

Problem - DVD's play back perfectly until the last 10 minutes or so of dvd and then picture starts to artifact and audio is garbled. If I burn the same dvd back to back to compare results they vary slightly although both exhibit the same effect. Burning at 4x. I know there are a lot of possibilities for solutions, but does anybody know a definite answer?

Could it be my dvd player? Burning too fast? Bad batch of Riteks?

    Thanks in advance

  2. Sounds like a media problem...
How much data are you burning? I personally keep my shrinking to 4.464gb... This pretty much is standard to avoid the problems with potential bad media, not being completely inked. If that is your current setting, you should perhaps try to go even lower then that on this batch of Riteks - at least to test all possibilties. If that turns out to be the problem, well, you saved yourself a huge headache and a few extra bucks...

yep, the last few mins of a movie messing up is a sign that your data is too big. as suggested, try shrinking the movies down to about 4300mb-4400mb. you can also try burning at 2x also.

  4. Agree....

Some DVD players don't like the cheaper media (I've got 2 of them). For your next batch, step up to Maxell or Taiyo Yuden. These problems went away for me at full 4.7gb burns (which is what I thought I was paying for to begin with ). Tis more expensive, but the satisfaction was well worth it to me.

Anyway, before you buy, surf the media forum. You don't want to end up with re-branded or fake media.

  6. Yeah I thought Ritek G04's were supposed to be some of the better media according to everyone on this site. I'm not going to settle with burning 90 - 95% capacity for the dvd.

    Thanks for the thoughts though

yes, riteks are VERY good dvds. but still, if your movie is too big, it will skip at the end, no matter what media you are using. riteks may be able to burn more data than cheaper dvds, but they do have their limits

Some are better than others, depending mainly on quality control.
I wouldn't recommend using the Traxdata (Ritek's own brand) that come in slim-boxes, for example, as they often come scratched out-of-the-box.

If your movie is too big it will simply not fit on a DVD-R.
If your media is good and you're burning at its optimum speed (as well as your burner one), you should be able to write at least 4,464MB with no problem.

Not really, ive burned over a hundred dvds of Ritek G04 and most of them have been at 4487MB (4.38GB) the maximum limit on the dvd. ive never had a problem with playback in my pc or dvd player.

yes, i have had pronlems with other media at this setting (4487MB) but never with Riteks G04.

  10. Maybe try burning at a slower speed?

My Plextor 708A, even with 8X media and latest firmware, won't burn at 8X without starting to lose it at the end, sometimes it only gets to the middle before trouble starts. Burning at 4X solves that problem for me.

  11. three solutions (use one, the other, the other, or all of them)

    1) change the size in dvdshrink to less than 4400, I do 4200
    2) slow down the burning speed
    3) defrag your hard drive *probably not the cause, but a good idea

I totally agree with you Macleod, since I've changed the size to 4200MB (which normally only changes the quality by 3%) and defragged I have not gotten any errors at all.

I ripped and burned about 175 DVDs with no errors on a 250GB drive and I would keep about 30 movies on there at a time. Never really thought about defragging. After defragging and cutting movies to 4200MB I have done about 300 more DVDs with no problems at all.

  15. Most of the DVDs that I have are not commercial movies. I own my own business and do digital video for many clients from weddings, graduations, to functions.

I do about 10 of those kind of DVDs a month, and keep those on the hard drive for a month to make copies in a hurry. I also keep a hard copy on DVD.

The other DVDs are either owned by me or friends and we make "backups" of them too!

  16. danfront,

if you dont mind me asking, what do you charge clients for doing transfers. I sounds like you actually record the actual event and then do all of the converstions, but I was wondering if you do stuff where someone bring you a tape and you transfer it to DVD.

What I have been doing is charging $15 for 2 hours of video. Taking the VHs or 8mm and converting (using my panny dvd recorder) to dvd-ram and then using tmpgenc dvd author or movie factory 2 to make menus, chapters, etc.

When I told people (on this forum) what I charge. They think I am nuts (I am essentially doing it for free), however, when I tell non techie folks about it, they also think I am nuts (I dont charge near enough). Wanted to know what you charge for doing stuff.

  17. macleod,

If you work for UNISEF, those price would be great, but if you're trying to make money, you need to charge more.

For transefers from non-digital forms I charge $25 for 2 hours and that's just a 1 to 1 conversion with no menus or editing. It goes up from there depending on what they want edited. If someone wanted 2 hours of video on a DVD-R or DVD+R with menus for the different chapters the price would be closer to $40-$50.

I like to use ULEAD DVD Workshop to put all the MPEG2 video together, it's a great piece of software and really easy and fast to use. I have had not a single problem making DVDs for clients using ULEAD DVD Workshop yet.

As far as doing the actual video recording an DV, I have a friend I use for that, since I don't have time to actually go video tape something for a client. For his services I charge $45/hr and I pay him $30/hr. He uses my Canon GL2 for recording.

I aslo use Ritek printable DVDs and use an Epson R300M to print on the DVDs. I also put the DVDs in blank cases an use the Meritline Glossy DVD case covers to print covers for the cases. For that extra service just mentioned I charge an additional $5 if they want it.

    Hope that helps you some!
