Ok, after some problems with my pc i have decided to try and do my backing up of dvds on my mac (12" powerbook g4@ 1ghz 512mb ram) I have an external burner (sony dru 500) the mac has no problem with this burner but.. when trying to burn a backedup dvd to a dvdr im having problems. There is no need for compresion as the dvd ripped using dvd backup is under 4.7gb
the problem i have is burning a dvd for use on standalones it seems to only want to burn as a data dvd with the video_ts and audio_ts folders(using the bulit in burning software in finder), on my pc i use a dvd burning program called copy2cd/dvd (im sure you all know of it) im looking for something that is much like this program for cheap or free unless there is a way to do it using finder that im just being dumb and knowing
oh yeah btw im sort of a n00b to mac/osx

you have to use DVDImager which you can get off versiontracker

make the image from the AUDIO/VIDEO_TS folders
then burn the image using disk copy and the finer burn

or get one of the burners like MMB or Firestarter FX - also off versiontracker.
I have not done it before but i imagine they can handle a image for burning

Future reference, think about getting Roxio's Toast Titanium for that mac, its just what you need!!!!!!!!

There is a free solution for this, which is the combination of DVD Imager, and Disk Utility (bundled with OS X, located in your /applications/utilities folder). You first backup the DVD to your hard drive unprotected using ripping software (MacTheRipper, DVDBackup, OSEx or YadeX - all freeware). Then, you use DVD Imager to turn the DVD folder on your HD (should be a folder with the name of the original DVD, containing at least a VIDEO_TS folder) into a UDF disk image. Then, you launch Disk Utility, insert a blank DVD-R, and use the 'burn image' function to burn that image that DVD Imager made to DVD-R. If you're willing to spend some money, Toast can eliminate the making DVD image step, but it costs about $70.

Normally, I would agree with you about Roxio, but Toast is really an excellent program, and really the best of class for OSX. It's useful for all sorts of burning beyond the basic data backups, including from DV source. The best solution for making DVDs from captured content in FCE or whatever is DVD Studio Pro, but at $500, it's quite expensive. Alternatively, Toast works ok, or even freeware such as mencoder and Sizzle, combined with DVD Imager and Disk Utility can be made to work with decent results. The output is going to look a lot less professional than what can be done with DVD Studio Pro, or even iDVD in some cases. It really depends on how much playtime you want to cram onto a DVD, the quality you expect, and the level of presentation of the DVD (menus, scene selections, etc.) you desire. If you plan on doing a lot of burning on the Mac, Toast will become invaluable to you.

in my opinion, toast should be included as part of the OS package apps you get... but hey will that happen?

Its a great app, well worth its weight in gold.
Perfect because as you are finding out, you can just drag/drop and burn a dvd.

Sure, the dvd image is only just 1 more step and thats easy, but toast is like the hallmark burn app. What else can i say
