Alcohol-based markers like Sharpies are fine. The polycarbonate plastics they use for CD/DVDs are OK with it. One time I found out the hard way what isn't safe. I had bought a commercial VCD and there was a drop of dried glue on the back - probably from careless packing. I scrubbed at it with isopropyl alcohol on a paper towel and I was actually making progress, but very slowly. Well, it was getting close to dinner time so I decided to try some lacquer thinner on it. I had used it before to dissolve dried glue. Well ....lacquer thinner is a nasty stew of organic solvents ...all of which just love to eat polycarbonate. It destroyed that CD immediately, giving it an opaque color. I didn't do that again
