I have a working Pioneer 104 in a Firewire enclosure and mostly use DVD Shrink and Record Now 4.5 to burn with and no problems and no coasters.
Just bought a 106 external USB for the faster burn speeds. The PC sees the drive, DVD shrink works and Record Now shows the drive as a 106 but I get an error code after a minute or two of burning.
The Record Now help site does not list the 106 as a recognized drive on their list. I would rather stay with Record Now from Stomp because I like it. Has anyone gotten this combination to work??
I read in the archives to check that I'm in DMA mode not PIO mode which I will do tonight after work. Anthing else to check? The Ebay seller left out the NTI DVD burning software disk promised, but I understand that software is not very good.
I haven't updated my profile in a while. I have a 6 month old new PC with usb 2 so that is not an issue. I wish now I had bought firewire instead of usb.
Any ideas?

I don't think DMA or PIO mode applies to USB drives.
Look up the error code , if it's underrun you have a speed problem.
Try one at 1X -
Thanks Foo, I did have it set at Max speed and didn't try it on the slowest setting. The speeds on Record Max show 1x, 2x, etc. for the 104 but with the 106 it says max, mid and min.
I didn't mention, but I was using Ritek GO4 that burns at 2x on the 104 so I was looking for a 15 min burn instead of a 30 min burn. What do I do if it burns at min setting? The faster speed was the whole point in "upgrading"!!

Tompika:
Thanks. I downloaded the update and will try it tonight.

I installed the update and now the record speed shows instead of max, med and min, so it did some changes.
I tried to burn again with a RW disk and still get :
Error-9 @ Sector (with the sector number varies). I can't find a minus error code in the help section. Any ideas?

how many usb devices are you running ? was just a thought... USB will never be AS good a firewire and can get into its own bottlenecks (sry to the fans of usb, i use it myself outta lazyness, but i dont run external USB drives HDs or burners /capture)
It appears that the CPU was operating so fast that it began to execute instructions before they arrived. This execution of future instructions created a small tear in space-time itself through which part of the cpu passed into a parallel universe -
faster is not always better my young padawan ( I love that word) ....

Faster burns are all well and good but it also greatly increases the risk of bad burnsthe process is not very precise to begin with and the faster the light (which is all a laser is) tries to write the data the greater the risks of bad data if it isn't a complete coaster.
My brain hurts...... -
I unplugged my other USB device and I still get the same -9 error code after only 2% of burn?

Tonight I will check my adaptec\directory and see what version is there and then install 4.71.2 and see if that helps. Thanks!!
LynnsABCs -
I installed the adaptec 4.71.2 update and it still doesn't work. The seller is sending a "$79" value burning software he forgot to include in the shipment that was supposed to come with the burner, the "latest version of NTI CD/DVD Burning Software. Anybody heard of it?
If that doesn't work, I will probably buy a copy of Nero 6 but I would prefer getting my RecordNow Max 4.5 from stomp to work like it did on the Pioneer 104 firewire enclosure.

Bottom line as I see it
The Pioneer 106 does work with RecordNow Max.
It has something to do with the enclosure or the USB connection.
You can give Nero a try though... -
If the burner won't work with the Ebay sellers software he is sending, I will request that he swaps it for a firewire version. I wish I had bought that to start with!! The specs showed a slightly faster data transfer speed for USB 2 over Firewire which prompted by choice.

I use record now max with my 106 and it works just great !!!!!!!!!
Internal one it is !!!!!My brain hurts...... -
Would I gain anything by un-installing and then re-installing Record Now Max from the original CD?
LynnsABCs -
The Ebay vendor (esystor) sent me the burning software last night and I got it loaded. It was NTI CD/DVD Gold. It will burn a DVD but using the 4X blank DVD the only burn speed showing is 1X! The enclosure is a ME 320. The ebay item number is 2781213471.
I have emailed them with my problem of not being able to burn at 4X with their software as advertised. Interested to hear their response.
Since the NTI software will burn a DVD, why won't RecordNow MAX which I uninstalled, then re-installed plus doing the updates and still will not burn a DVD-RW. Got tired of making coasters after only 2% or less of burn.

I would try getting the dvd media checker that is here on this websight. It will let you know if the media you are using is really 4 speed or just relabeled 1 or 2 speed ones .... It has been known to happen....
Only other thing i could suggest is make sure nothing is running in the background when burning and use a dvdrw until you get kinks ironed out that was if it goes bad just erase and try again.
Software usally does not determine burn speed but your system and the media and as i've said in the past faster is not always better ...My brain hurts...... -
Turned out I had a bad batch of Ritek GO4's. I re-ordered and tried from the new batch and I can now burn at 4X speed.
LynnsABCs -
did you get your money back ????
that is one reason I dont like ordering online. bad media, bad coasters and i got enough of them from cdr's
ritek is usually good stuff suprised to here they had a bad batch..... which is why ill never upgrade to an 8 speed the process is very iffy now
4 speed is fast enough thank you very much....My brain hurts......
