I have to do some research on finding a cheap card to capture video in Linux, probably on a old system as well. Any suggestions?

There is a software package called Video4Linux that provides support for video capture and playback using generic BT848/878/879 capture cards such as WinTV, AverMedia, CyberMail, and others. Not sure what video/audio codecs and formats it supports. I've never used it personally and can't tell you much about it, but here is a link to a resource page with info and software:
