  1. Anyone have any tips on what free software is best for converting wma to wav files? I need to clean up some wma files in my wavelab program. I've tried musicmatch, but it doesn't convert wma. I've tried cdex, but it gives me run time errors all the time so I uninstalled it.

  2. Isn't there anything that just converts the file? I don't need all the auditing extras. And this isn't 'freeware'.

There is a fully functional shareware version on their homepage.
Just load the file into the program and save as wav...if this isn't easy, then I don't know.

Satanico Pandemonium is correct, GOLDWAVE is an excellent software for your purpose. I have used this for 3 years. The trial version is fully functional
just download the trial and you will be set.

  5. Okay, I got goldwave. Now, I try to open my wma file and it says "This file is copy protected. Copy protected files cannot be opened." Huh? I paid for this track as a download off 'puretracks.com'. Is this for real? I paid for the damn thing and I can't even convert it to wav for sound quality editing? That's ridiculous.

    This from Puretracks.com webpage.

Currently our website supports Internet Explorer 5.0 and above on the
    Windows operating system (Win 98SE / ME / 2000 / XP / 2003),
and is available to Canadian residents only.

We value our Mac audience, however the Windows Media player for the Mac
platform is not currently compatible with Microsoft protected audio content.
Puretracks is currently working to make our service available to Mac users.

So if you had read that you would have known the content is protected.

  7. But I'm not using a mac. Does anyone know how I can get past this copy protection. I'm not selling the songs. I just want to improve them for my own use. That's the last time I pay for music by download. They've got to be kidding. Crappy 192 kps quality for $1 a piece, and then "Sorry, you can't edit!"

I f you paid for the download it may well be that it will not open or convert in GOLDWAVE. I have had this happen with some free WMA downloaded songs from various sites.
I use TOTAL RECORDER ($11.95 usd) , you can play the WMA in FOOBAR, WINAMP, etc. and record as a WAV FILE with very good results and then edit in GOLDWAVE.
Just go to http://www.highcriteria.com/ and check it out. It works very well and I use it to save streaming audio from webb radio to make my own personal radio files to listen to at work.
