Ya I updated to windows media player 9 shortly after I reformatted my computer. I was able to play back my vob files on wmp 9 the files that I ripped off of my dvds. Anyway I just installed nero6 and for some reason I am unable to play back vob files on wmp 9. I can play them back if they are on a dvd, but I can't play them back if they are saved on my hard drive. Can anyone think of any parameters I can tweek in wmp 9 so I can go back to watching movies off my hard drive. I don't like watching movies off my hard drive with power dvd because you have to pick every single chapter when you watch a movie. With wmp 9 I could pick the first chapter and i would play all the way thru everytime, but ever since I installed nero 6, wmp 9 isn't working the same. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. P.S. the error message i'm getting in wmp 9 goes like this- wmp cannot skip to the requested location in the dvd at this time.

Windows Media Player is very differnt depending on the system its installed on
The ORDER in which you add codecs to your system is the most important thing that affects WMP's behaviour
beneath this there are other system factors that enter in next...
For example:
I have 4 pentium systems side by side
DESPITE the fact that I have the same programs installed on each,
WMP on one refuses to play mpeg-1 .dat files!!!
Dragging the same file to each of the others produces instant playback.
Also, the MEDIA PLAYER classic often accepts all formats WMP9 can play
but sometimes it has been known to download the same codec that its brother program WMP9 plays correclt already
Why one codec won't apply across both versions of the same player (6.4 and 9) one one system and HAPPILY be available to both players on another is not even discussed in the MICROSOFT DATABASE..perhaps because the designers know how flawed their code is and can't possibley hope to straighten it out short of RE-INSTALL.
Once again.. Its all dependent on which MPEG-2 DECODER is registered by the MEDIA PLAYER to play MPEG-2 (as you know MICROSOFT opted to not pay the MPEG-2 committee because they figured If you wanna play a DVD..thats your problem buddy!-WMP cannot play MPEG-2 naturally)
So always install all you programs exactly in the same order otherwise..what you've posted about will happen..
To find out which program WMP has chosen to use to play DVD's
look in properties> advanced >video renderer IN CLASSIC to find out which CODEC WMP 9 is using
(ass backwards method but produces results)

I usually choose to show all files and open the IFO file. plays the whole movie fine.

Well, I don't think MPC is WMP9's brother. The former is made by Gabest while the latter by Microsoft.
Anyway, to answer the question, I think you can install PowerDVD and then uninstall it. The Cyberlink MPEG2 decoder will remain in your system (or so I think) and WMP9 will be able to play your DVD disks.
Give it a try anyway. But make surr you install PowerDVD 4 or higher, since I hear previous versions of Cyberlink's MPEG2 decoder give some trouble and conflicts with other progs (Ulead for example)
Best regards.

Personally I use Power DVD (FAR better then WMP)
It is Trialware, and therefore at least free to have a good play with.
I have had issues with WMP (any version) and as previous posters have said, WMP can be tempremental depending on other details of your system set up (both hard and soft ware)

claybuster your an idiot.
to whom it may concern i'm using windows xp as an operating system. What ever my problem is, it directly involves the installation of nero 6, possible since it was the most recent program installed on my computer. I think I will un-install power DVD and re-install it and see if that works. Thanks for all the advice.

Why am I an Idiot? Would it be because your too ******* stupid to figure out that after you right click on the the file and select open with you simply choose WMP as the default for those types of files. I guess I figured you had a little common ******* sense!
As for using PowerDVD instead of being the moron that you are choose the folder you have the files in and NOT the individual files inside it AGAIN you ******* MORON.Rick

Why would you call this guy, ClayBuster an idiot. I have done what I think he said. Sometimes it didn't work and sometimes it was the only thing that worked. In a situation like what I think you discribing.
The worst thing I can see happening is you waste a little time and it doesn't work.
Thanks Mike.
